To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OTTO HERBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Olalla, in the county of Kitsap, State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Cover Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in boxes having sliding closures, and has for its principal object to provide a novel latch construction for locking the closure against accidental sliding.

Another object of the invention is to provide a latch for the purpose described which is adapted to be secured to the box by a seal whereby the contents of the box may be effectively guarded against being opened by unauthorized persons without detection.

A further object of the invention is to mount the latch in a block having opposed upper and lower seats formed in the outer face and on either side of the latch for alternately receiving the finger-piece of the latch to retain said latch in either of its extreme positions.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a latch which is composed of a minimum number of parts, is therefore simple in construction, and is cheap to manufacture.

lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

In the drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a box constructed in accordance with my invention, the latch being shown in its operative position, Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the box taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the latch supporting block, the latch being removed, and Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.

Like reference numerals designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.

Referring to the drawing, 5 designates a box which includes opposed sides 66, ends 7 and a bottom 8. Secured to the outer faces of the upper edges of the sides 6 are longitu dinal ribs 99 which are respectively engaged by depending grooved flanges l0.10 carried by a sliding closure element 11. Fixedly secured against removal to one side wall 6 of the box is a vertically disposed block 12. This block is centrally formed in its outer face with a longitudinal groove 13, and with opposed upper and lower seats 14: and 15 respectively, said seats communicating with the groove and with the side edges of the block. Secured to the block 12 and registering with the groove 18 are spaced upper and lower guide elements 16 and 17 respect vely, said elements being disposed above and below the seats 14 and 15. mounted within the groove 13 and within the guide elements 16 and 17 is a latch bolt, which is designated as a whole by the reference numeral 18. This bolt is preferably formed from a single piece of wire, and is centrally bent to form an eye 19 which constitutes a finger-piece. This eye is adapted to be positioned within either of the seats 14: or 15 and thereby hold said pin in either of its extreme positions. When the eye 19 is positioned within the upper seat 14, the upper end of the bolt projects into a seat 20 formed in the adjacent flange 10 of the closure element 11, and thereby holds said element from sliding movement.

In order to effectually seal the latch, the block 12 is provided with a staple 21 which extends laterally from and registers with the upper seat 14:. It is to be observed that the eye 19 of the latch bolt is of a size sufficient to project beyond the side edge of the block in register with the staple 21. A seal 22 of any suitable type is then secured to the eye 19 and staple 21. It will thus be observed that by this means the closure element 11 of the box cannot be removed without detection. By employing the block 12 the latch bolt 18 is positioned from the side wall 6 of the box so as to easily permit of the attachment of the Seal 22.

What is claimed is:

1. In combination with a box, of a slidable closure element therefor, a block secured to the box and formed with a longitu- Slidablydinally disposed groove, and opposed upper and lower seats formed in its outer face and communicating with the grooves and with the sides thereof, a latch bolt slidably mounted within the groove for engagement with the closure element to lock the same against movement, said bolt being centrally formed with an eye constituting a finger piece adapted to be alternately positioned within the seats of the block to hold the bolt in either of its extreme positions.

2. In combination with a box, of a slidable closure element therefor, a block secured to the box and formed on its outer face with a longitudinal groove and a seat, a latch bolt slidably mounted within the groove for engagement with the closure ele ment to lock the same against movement, said bolt being formed with an eye constitouting a finger piece adapted to be positioned within the seat when the bolt is disposed in looking engagement with the closure element, a staple extending laterally from the block and registering with the seat, and a seal connecting said eye and staple.
