cases, such, for example, as are used in car` rying beer bottles or other packages, and
which have to be handled repeatedly in the transportation of such bottles or packages. Crates or cases used for this purpose are liable to be broken or to come apart by reason of the strains to which they are subjected, and the main object of the present invention is to provide simple and effective means for bracing the crates against such strains and firmly holding the several parts of the crate together.
Another object of the invention is to provide for tightening the bracing and holding devices when necessary.
Another object of the invention is to dispense with box straps such as are sometimes used for crates of this character.
Other objects of the invention will appear hereinafter.
The accompanying drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention, and referring thereto Figure l is a perspective of the crate or case. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of one end of the case. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on line ac3-x3 in Fig. 2.
The crate or case comprises a bottom l, sides 2 and end members 3, all said parts being formed in the usual manner, of wood, and being connected together to form a rectangular box, crate or case, by nails or any other suitable means. The bracing and retaining means comprises two wires or rods 4, one of which is provided at each end of the box. Each wire or rod 4 extends in a groove or channel 5, cut in the bottom l and in the sides 2 of the box, either by grooving the said members before the wire or rod is put in place, or by drawing the wires or rods into place with suiiicient tension to cause them to be embodied in the wooden bottom and sides. The end portions 4 of the said wire or rod 4 are bent inwardly and extend through openings 7 in the side members 2 and end members 3, said openings extending obliquely inward toward the center of the box, through side members 2 and the end members 3 and openings on the inside of the end members so that the end portions 4 of the wires or rods 4 may extend through said openings 7 to the inside of the box. It will be observed that the portions of the wires or rods 4 which are outside of the box extend around the end members 3 so that the tension of said wires or rods on the sides and bottom members is resisted by the end members, and the oblique direction of the holes 4 enables the inner end portions of the wires or rods to be brought out of the plane of the outer portion thereof to the inside of the box, so as to engage with tightening means inside of the box. Said tightening means consists of a turn buckle formed, for example, as a sleeve 10 internally screw threaded to engage right and left screw threads on the respective end portions 4 of the wire or rod 4. By tightening up this turn buckle any desired amount of tension may be put on the wire or rod 4to cause the same to tightly grip the bottom and side members against the end members and hold the parts together, thereby enabling the crate or case to withstand the jarring strains, incident to its use.
The box or crate is preferably provided with the usual hand holes 12 in the end members 3 and the turn buckle above described is located between said hand holes and the top of the crate or case, so that it does not interfere with the convenient manipulation of the crate or case, or with the placing of the bottles or packages therein.
