Description

@Him @tithe maar CHARLES o. Weidetor LEnsvILLE, CONNECTICUT.
Letters Patent No. 105,536, dated July 19, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT 1N WATER-WHEELs.l
-Mohr.-
` i ,The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and'making part of the same WRIGHT, vof
` ter-Wheel and-I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, aud exact description thereof, which i will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had `to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
Fgurel representsa vertical central section of` my improved Water-wheel.`
p `Figure 2`is a horizontal section of the same. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding `This invention has `for 'its Vobject so to` construct l, i water-wheels thatthe full power of the waterfmay be .i utilized. y i
The invention consistsin 'making'the wheel entirely-open in the center,`s'othat theA water passing a, ,through it will 'not beobstructed by a shaft, hub, or other central structure. 'l
The invention consists, also, in so shaping the buckets that the water will act on different parts of them as it `passes through the wheel. Thereby the full :3. `power of the water-twill be utilized; 1Where friction is "produced, power will also-be' developed.
`A, in the drawing, represents the shaft. to which l `my water-wheel'is securedl.
lo the lower end of the shaft is mounted, or upon `itis formed agplate, `B, which `constitutes they upper 4platcof the wheel.` f y C C` are the buckets."
`*The same' serve vto-connect the top'plate Bgot the wheel with the bottom` plate D ofthe same,"so that 4.the central obstruction produced. by the ordinary hub,
cone, l or shaft, will not `be in the wheel.
Tothe under side of the plate D is secured a short downward-projeating stud, E, which constitutes the f lower part of the shaft, resting onl the step or other support.
The bucketsO are of peculiar form, as shown in lig. 2. Their inner parts `are curved, being almost quarters of circles, while their cuter parts are straight,
. heilig tangents to the curves, as shown.
' The water, entering between two buckets, strikes l the hollow of the one along which it eiliters, andv applies its power thereby to the wheel.v
From the concave surface it is `lthrown oii toward the-centerof the wheel against the concave surface of the opposite bucket. is thus applied .and utilized, on the second bucket.
The water nally passes ont about opposite to where it entered the wheel.
The course of the water is indicated by the arrow in iig. '2. It will he seen that this advantageous course of4 the water,"aud the complete absorption of its power,v couldnot be obtained if the central part of the wheel were obstructed in the usual manner.
Having thus described 'my invention,
f I Claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The water-wheel, composed of the plates B D and buckets Oythe space between thc buckets being not obstructed by a centralrshaft orhub,` as set forth.
2. A series of buckets C, curved on the inner, and straight on the outer side thereof, to allow` a column `of waterto act simultaneously ou two or more of i them, when varranged as set forth.
' CHARLES 1). AWRIGHT.
