To all whom it may concern;
Beit known that I, .JonN Srilori an, of Vancouver, Province of British'Columbia, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tubular .Mortise -Locks; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
This invention is an improvement in socalled tubular locks for doors and the like, such locks being usually provided with eylindric tubes which can be-fii serted in angerholes in the door; one tab containing thev bolt devices. t v The present invention hasparticular reference to the bolt portion of such lock, and
its object is to provide a very simple but make operative parts readily accessible and replaceable in the tubes, thereby facilitating the assembling and adjusting of the working parts of the lock, and enablingsuch .4 lock to be readily adjusted for right or left hand doors.
Theinvention consists in the novel construction of the'parts of the lock, as hereinafter-summarized in the claims, and as illustrated in the accompanying drawingsand 1' will describe the invention in detail with reference to said drawings.

The tube 1 -contains the bolt devices, which are preferably placed in a removable casing 4, similar to casing 2, and'preferably' I angular in cross section. This casing 4 is removably secured in tube 1 and in said casing is slidably mounted a bolt having a head 5, which is adapted to project through an opening 1 in the facingplate 1,,an'd an enlargement 5 in rear of the head by which the bolt is guided in the casing.- The bolt also has a reduced shank 5", in rear of enla1;gement 5, and is provided with transverse notches 5", 5, adjacent said enlargement. .The rear end of the shank is {no *vided with enlargement-s or projections 5 and 5' which are connected by a reduced portion 5 of the shank.

The locking levers 6 are kept in position by and between the projections 5 5, and the side walls of the casing 4, and the rear ends of the lock- 10 ing levers extend beyond the shank projection 5 and beside the reduced portion 5 of the bolt shank. In the side walls of the casing 4t, a jacent the projections 5", 5', are key openings 5 4 which come opposite key openings 1? in the tube 1'; so that a suitable key may be inserted through such openings between the projections 5 5 Said key is shown as pro vided with a head 7 having a central slot 0 7 adapted to straddle or accommodate the contracted portion 5 of the bolt shank; and at each side of the slot 7 said head has fingers 7 which are adapted to engage one of the opposed faces of the projection 5 or 5 to move the bolt in or out. Before the bolt can be moved however it is necessary to release the locking levers 6; and this is accomplished by shoulders 7 on the key head;- whichshoulders will engage the rear ends of the levers 6 and depress the latter thereby lifting the forward ends thereof ant disengaging their teeth 6 from the notch 5, or 5, with which they may be engagetl before the fingers 7 engage the projections 5 or 5.
fWhen the bolt is retracted the teeth 6 engage notch 5; then when the key is inserted and turned its shoulders 7" first cause the locking levers to disengage the notch 5, and then its fingers 7 engage the projections 5 and slide the bolt forward; and as the key continues to turn levers 6 are released and springs 6 cause the teeth 6 of said levers to engage notch 5 and lock the bolt in pro jected position, see FigsfiQ and 4. i
The bolt can be unlocked, or retracted, by inserting the key and turning it in the reverse direction. Then shoulders 7 will first cause the levers 6-to disengage notch 5 then fingers 7 will engage project-ion 5 and retract the bolt; and then the springs cause levers 6 to reengage notch 5 and lock the bolt in retracted position, see Fig. 2.
By varying the width or the cross sectional'shape of the shank portion 5 the locks can be made so that special keys will be required for the different locks. By the employment of inner removable casings such as 2 and 4, the operative parts of the lock can be oporatively assembled conveniently and accurately before entering them into the tubes, and can also be readily removed from the tubes for repairs. The casings 2 and 4 V are inserted in casings l, 1 before the caps 1 1 are attached thereto, and Said caps may be removed when it is desired to remove the casings 2 and a. The casing can also be readily removed from the tube and turned half over to make the latch and bolt suit right or left hand doors. The lock is also difiicult to pick for if one locking lever is tampered with and released the other will still hold.
What I claim is: w
1. In a tubularvlock, the combination of 5 a face plate, a tube attached thereto, a re movable casing in said tube, a locking .bolt slidably mounted in said casing having a notched shank, a pair of toothed locking le vers mounted in the casing at opposite sides 0 of the shank. and adapted to engage one of the notches in the shank, springs for normally holding the teeth of the locking ilevers in engagen'ient with one of the notches in the shank, and a key adapted to' first '55 cause the locking levers to release the bolt and then to move the bolt, substantially as- .described.
2. In a tubular lock, the combination of a face plate, a tube attached thereto, a removable casing ,in said tube, a locking bolt slidably mounted in said casing having a, notched shank provided with adjacent enlargementsnear its rear end, a pair of toothed locking levers mounted in the casing at opposite sides of the shank adapted to engage one of the notches in the shank, springs for normally holding the teeth of the locking levers in engagement with one of the notches in the shank, and a key adaptwe ed to cause the locking lovers to release the bolt, and then to engage one of the enlargements on the shank to move. the bolt, substantially as described.
3. In a tubular lock, the combination of a face plate, a casing connected therewith,
a partition inside the casing, a slidable l-atc h adapted to project through the face plate and having a shank guided in the partition in the casing, a' spring interposed between the partition and the head of the latch, a rotatable sleeve journaled transversely" of the casing in rear otthe shank, a disk mounted onsaid sleeve, a slotted link pivotally, connectedto thediskand to the btlt 1 15 shank, and adapted to retract the bolt when l the sleeve is turned in either directi m', and
a handle engaging said sleeve.
4.
