IGNITION DEVICE.
i To all whom, ii may concern Be it known that l. Jonslli'nsinn CURRY, a citizen ot the United States, residing at; 'lelluride. in the county ol San Miguel and State of (li'ilorado. have in vented certain new and list-till Ilinprovements in ignition il evices. of which the following; is a speeilit-alien, rclerenee heinil' had therein to the atcompanving drawing.
My invention relates to improvements in spark plugs and has particular relerenee to a plug adapted for use in the cylinder of an engine whereby the spark is proiilueed according to the amount (it compression in the cylinder. 7
Referring o the act:ompanyine drawings,
Figure l. is a vertical elevation ol. a spark plug partly in cross section, illustrating an application ot my invention and l ig. 2 is a cross section on the line ol Fin. 1.
. 3 is a tube provided with threads 4- and a. head 3 and is adaptetil. to be screwed into the head ol the cylinder being also provided with a, t'ran'ie 5.
(l is a i nutter separated by the insulation 7 and provided with the tension spring 8 and the eonipression spring 9. On this plunger is mounted the oyliiuler it), the spring S'heingr secured to the cylinder 1t) and to the flange ill while the, spring l eoni 'n-essed between the flange. l2 and the slide 13. This slide is mounted in the slide- Way 5 of the 'tranic :7 and is provided with the yoke it-lhaving laiarine upon the two projections '15 and H3 extending from the. tran'e, said projections lieing threaded and provided with nuts [5- aml lti so that lay screwing the nuts down upon the. projections 1." and it the slide-l2; and its plunger ti is l'oi'eed into the plug.
The in .1 is insulated vtroin the l'raine 51 hr nsnlati a such as '17 and the t'uhe it) i preleral-ly ll lltlttlt'l"'Fl'tilil the. side ot' the cylinder :l by an insulation ring su h its 18. The current enters hy he wire It the other side of the circuit hein grounded on the cylinder it the engine. During the eompi. iltlll St'IU CC the plunger t' is moved within the opening 20 in the head 3 by the pressure Within the cylinder. This causes the spring 8 secured to the flange ll and to the cylint'lcr l0 to pull the cylinder 10 after it, and at the same time the spring t) is Specification 02 Letters Patent.

Application filed April 2, 1910. Serial No. 558,030.
coinpressetjl bet ween the flange l2 and the slide 13. \Vhen the cylinder lO-contaets with the end ol the electric circuit 1.), the circuit: is eoni 'ileted through the cylinder 10. plunger (3, head 3, outer tubing it, and
the cylinder oi. the engine which is grounded. After the cylinder 10 has made pr ed charge within the cylinder. By adn. re the nuts 15 and ill" the slide 13 is shrtted thereby causing the moving parts to \'l\l(l more freely to the pressure within the cylinder or to give greater resistance thereto and in this way the plug can he adjusted to spark at dill'erent pressures. After the plunger has retarded to the si'iarlringl point and the ex ilosion has talcen place in the cylinder, the plunger is then again returned to its normal position ly the spring 9.
()t course it will be understood that various modifications may he made without dcpartine from the spirit oi. the invention as set forth in the claims.
Having; described my invention, what I claim as new. and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. in a spark plug. an outer easing being adapted to he secured in the cylinder of an engine, a movable plunger and a movable cylinder, resilient means against. which said ilunger and said cylinder may he moved, means 't'or adjusting said resilient means, one end of an electric circuit attached to said casing in the path o'l said cylinder and insulated therefrom. the other end of said ciit'liit grounded. said plunger normally emanated, whereby said cylinder is moved inwardly and completes said circuit during the compression stroke of said engine and is lollowed by said plunger which opens said circuit as said compression is completed.
2. In a spark plug, an outer casing being adapted to be secured within the cylinder of an engine, a movable 'ilunger and a moi able cylinder resilient means for controlling the movements of said plunger and said cylinder, one end cl :in i-leetrie cir ui secured in the path of said cylinder and ini In testimony whereof I aflix iny sigiiaturc sulated therefrom, the other end of said in presence of two Witnesses. w circuit grounded whereby said cylinder is r moved inwardly 31161 completes said circuit BYRNARD GURhl' 5 during the compression stroke of said en- Witnesses: ggiune,- after which said plunger opens said M.
