TERMINALATTACHMENT-ENGAGING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Egg-tented Apr. 30, 1912.
Application filed August 18, 1910. Serial No. 577,792.
This invention relates to an improved terminal attachment engaging spark plugs.
The object of thls invention is to provide device for *a universal member which can be applied to any spark pluv and which will serve as an ordinary binding nut and also be able to engage with the various special terminal attachments now on the market.
My invention, therefore, consists in' the ifeatures of construction-and combination of parts described in the specification, pointed font in the claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
Much trouble in operating an explosive engine results from the terminal of the electric circuit breaking away from its connection with the sparkplug which of course is due to the constant 1arr1ng of the engine.
The simplest form of connection consists of a nut which is adapted to screw onto the spindle of the spark plug and clamp the end of the wire against another nutor a shoulder on the spindle. As this connection I has notproved satisfactory a number of 3 special terminal attachments have been corresponding special. attach;
I placed on the market. These terminal attachments are permanently secured to the endof the electric wire and there must he a cut on the spark plug. it therefore frequently happens that when a new spark plug is employed the terminal of the battery cannot be con-- nected thereto. In order to overcome this ditficulty' I provide a member adapted to be on the market.
mountedon any spark plug and constructed so that it will. engage with or be engaged by the various attachments tor terminals now In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 screw thread 3.
an elevation of a spark plug provided with my improved device. Fig. 2 is an enlarged central section through the device and a portion ofthe spark plug.
Again referring to the drawings 1 and 2 represent the two sections which form the outer casing of the spark plug and which are secured together in the usual manner. The section 2 is provided withthe usual \Vithin the casing is arranged the usual spindle a which projects beyond the end of the section 1 and the projeeting end of the spindle is threaded as shown at 5. I
My terminal attachmentengaging member comprises a nut 6 which is adapted to screw onto the end of the spindle 4, a washer .7 being preferably arranged between the end of the section 1 and the nut 6. On the top of the nut'G is formed an integral extension which consists of a neck portion 8 which swells. up to a spherical shaped por tion 9 which is topped by a cylindrical portic-n 10.- In the spherical shaped portion is formed an annular groove 11.
The use of the device is as follows,-lf the end of the wire which is to be attachedto the spark plug is not provided with any special attachment the end thereot is simply placed under the washer? and the nut G is turned down thereon. lf the end of the wire be provided with an attachment consisting of forked blades provided with sockets, the
blades are sprung over the spherical portion of the device; If the end of the wire is proided with a split ring attachment the ring is forced into the groov 11 in the spherical portion of the device and the end of the wire is provided witha closed ring attach mentthe ring is forced down over the cylindrical portion 10.
1. it terminal attachment engaging device consisting of a nut provided with an extcnsion, the portion of said extension adjacent to the nut being spherical shaped and the upper end of said extension being cylindrical shaped, the spherical sl'iape portion being provided with a circun'ii ereir tial slot at the upper end adjacent to the cylindrical portion.
2. A terminal attachment engaging device consisting of a nut provided with an exten sion, one portion of which is cylindrical shaped and the other portion spherical shaped, the said spherical portion being provided with a circumferential slot, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof, I sign the foregoing specification, in the presence of two wit nesses.
