Specification of Lettcrs Patent.'
Patented nar. 4, 191e.
, 'Application ilea March 8, 1911, Serial No. 613,050. Renewed August 24, 1912. Serial No. 716,883.
To all whom, z't may; concern: l
Be it known that l, JEAN F. `Winni, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of'New York, have invented a new and Improved Air-Anchor for Parachutes, of which the following is va specification.
My invention Vis an improved air anchor for use particularly in connection with air ship emergency sustaining parachute devices such for example, as is disclosed in my copending application', filed Oct. 1T, 1910, ser. No. 587,502.v
Primarily the invention has for its object quick opening anchor that can be compactlyfolded up when not in use and4 will he strong and light in its construction.
The invention also includes'thosc novel details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts all of which will be first tiilly described and then be specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in. which,
Figure 1, is a side elevation of the air anchor in use. Fig. Q, is an enlarged central section of theair anchor frame, the saine being shown open infull lines and lines. Fig. 3, is a view of the parts shown in Figi? folded up. Fig. 4, is al section on the line 4-t of' Fig. 2. Fig. 5, is a top plan view, of the top of the anchor frame. Fig. 46,'is a detail crspective View of the rib opening spring p ate and one of the springs. Fig. 7, is a view similar tolFig. 2, of thc anchor frame open and yshowing a Slight iinydification, thc` coverbeing omitted. Fig. S, is a view showingthc frame of. Fig.' 7, folded up. Fig'. 9, is a detail plan view of the upper spring cup and rib rack. i
ln'thc accompanying drawing in which like numerals and letters of reference indicate like parte in all of the figures, it'will be noticed that a central rod 1.) has aring 20 at its lower end for the cable '11, and is provided with a cup-like casing 2l near ita lower end 'into which a coil 'spring 22 on `the rod lf) projects.
designates a collar `that is mounted on the rod 19 between which and the spring easing the spring 22 is held, a stop 2A' being provided on the rod 19 to limit the upward movement of thc collar 23 under the influence ofthe spring 22.
At the upper end the rod 19 liasa fixture Bil having bearings 35 iii-which the rib. Sockets 36 are hinged as at 3S, stops 37 limit.- ng the 'opening movement of the ribs 31. rPhe ribs 3l are iliade of ash, or other suitable material' that will be light, strong and flexible, and they are-fitted into and secured tothe sockets 36.' At their outer ends the ribs 31 have socket members 29 over the louttons 30 ot" which the covering 42 is fastened. Hinged to the 'collar 23 at 26 are brace niemhers 25 eachof which is composed of two sections that are hinged together at Q7, one sectionbeingdiingcd 'at QGto the collar 23 and the other section being hinged at to thc socket QS).
Each rib 3l has a 'stop shoulder member 32 in the recess 33 of which the hinge joint Q7 of the respective brace is adapted' to lie when the parts are folded up, as shown in Fig. 4
ln orderto open the ribs Sl'fully, coil springs ll are vmounted .in slots 40.01 a 'ring 39 thatis fastened ,to the rod 19 near the top end of the saine, one end of which' spring- 41 being held vagainst thc rod 19, while its other end engages a rib 3l to continuously tend to open up the'frame. The anchor frame Vthus formed iscovcred by a suitable cover l2 which is sewn to the ribs 3l and has a central opening over which the mouth of a balloon bag 43 may be secured, a suitable cord mesh being fitted spring 42 may be omitted, or bothniay be used, if desired, so long as a 'quick initial :opening of the anchor is obtained.r
In practice the air anchor cable 11. isconncct'ed to the parzuchutes (not shown).
enter the saine. 'The anchnr thereupon acta i as :i diag te pall the paraehutes into, posh` 95 When the parachutcs and anchor are not in tion. W'henthe balloon bag 43 is employed it fills with air, and thus,I adds to the drag gingeiiect ot' the'device.
The foregoing described matter and the forms shown in Figs. l to 6 inclusive is divided out of my cti-pending application' hereinbefore referred to.-
In Fig. 7. ef seg. I. have shown a slight modification of the invention.l ln thls orm to the ribs. The upwardly movement of the collar 5l limited by a' iixed'stopv 9 on the rod. fin this form of the invention the operation is' essentially the saine as' in the other tori-n,- exeepting that iny lieu ot' the torsion springs of the other' form the coil @tiring arrangement is' substituted.
l AFrom the foregoing despription falten in connection ivith the accompanying; drawing..y it `is thought the 'complete construe-.riona operation and advantages f my inventionwill he, readily vapparent to'those skilled in the art to whiehthe invention al'uiertains.
What I claim isc-- M l.
