llUTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROY RANKIN MYERS, OF TWIN FALLS, IDAHO.
PRIN TIN Gr-PRESS ATTACHMENT.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, ROY RANKIN MYERS, a
` citizen of the United States, and a resident of Twin Falls, in the county of Twin Falls and State of Idaho, have invented certain Improvements in Printing-Press Attach ments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in printing press attachments, and has for its object, the forming of a simple cheap, easily operated attachment of the character specified, which may be attached to existing presses with but slight changes, and by means of which the forms may be tightly held and locked on the bed, without the use of the usual furniture.
ln the drawings: Figure l is a top plan view of a type bed provided with the iinprovement; Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. l; and, Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view.
As is known, with the usual printing press, the forms holding the set up type, are laid upon the type bed, and are held in place by bearers on each side, clamped and wedged securely in place. The forms are of varying size, and to accommodate such forms, furniture is made use of, to till the vacant space. The placing of the furniture requires time, and the forms are not held solidly, since so many pieces are required and made use of. Inthe present invention, the mechanism taking the place of the furniture is immediately adjustable to any position and is a part of the machine, hence always in place, and absolutely rigid, and automatic in its action. The said mechanism comprises a bar l of steel or like suitable material, having a plurality of spaced laterally extending legs 2, four or five in number, according to the size of the press, to which it is attached. The bar lies transversely on the upper face of the type bed 3 with the legs extending longitudinally of the bed. The under face of each leg 2 is provided with a series of ratchet teeth 4t, extending from the free end of the leg to a point a slight distance from the junction of the leg and' bar, and the teeth extend to theY outer end of the leg. When the forms have been placed on the type bed, the bar 1 is pressed firmly and strongly against the back sides thereof, and is locked in place by a bar 5 arranged transversely of the legs, on the under face of the ink plate, and pro- Speciication of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 24, 1911.

vided with teeth 6 for engaging the teeth of the legs.
The bar is operated by a rod 7, provided with a handle S 'at its outer end, and a1'- ranged substantially parallel with the legs, on the under face of the bed. The rod is journaled in the ribs l2 on the under face of the bed, and the inner end of the rod is offset laterally at 9, the offset portion 9 being journaled in a bearing 10 on the ink plate. The offset portion 9 is connected to the body of the rod by an inclined portion 11, and the said portion 1l is jo-urnaled in the bar 5 in a bearing 1l, The rod is provided with an annular shoulder 13, near the bar and a spring 14 encircles the rod, be'- tween the shoulder and one of the ribs 12.
A scale 15 is provided on the bar 1, for use in gaging the position of the type on the bed, and on the feed board, which is directly above t-he bed, a second scale is provided, which is used to gage the paper with respect to the type. The adjustment of the guides on the feed board is thus not only rapid but certain.
The rod 7 is locked from movement, by means of a latch 17, pivotedto the bed at 18, and adapted to engage a notch 19 in the rod. A pin 2() is provided for holding the latch in position. The latch holds the rod with the bar in locked or unlocked position, two notches 19 being provided.
In operation, the form being placed on the bed, the bar is pushed toward the saine, and is held in this position, while the slide lock rod 7 is moved to engage the teeth of bar .5 firmly with the teeth of the legs. lVhen the rod 7 moves longitudinally, the portion 11 thereof acts as a cam to move the bar 5 longitudinally of itself and transversely to the legs 2. engage or disengage each series of teeth on the bar from the teeth of the adjacent leg, thus locking the furniture bar 1 firmly in place or releasing the same. The teeth fl and (S are cut tine, so that a very fine adjustmentis provided for.V The legs move in the ribs 2l on the under face of the ink plate 22, if the ribs are of sufficient depth, and if not any suitable supporting means may be provided. 1n the drawings, the bar is shown in half way position, with the teeth of the bar partly engagedwith the teeth of the legs. The spring 14 is under compression when the rod 7 is in position roc to unlock the bar, and thus acts to hold the parts in locked position.
The device can be applied to existing presses With but little change, and holds the Jforms tightly in place, so that there is no possibility of accidental displacement.
I claim:
