Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MANLY E. MARGESON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kendallville, in the county of Noble and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mail-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

hIy invention relates to an improvement in mail boxes, and more particularly to boxes used on rural delivery routes.

The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view, Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a view in elevation of the carrier.

A, represents the casing or housing, preferably of cylindrical form, having a shaft 1 journaled in the ends thereof, hubs 2, 2, mounted upon the

shaft having spokes

3, 3, extending therefrom. Metal bands 4 are mounted on the ends of the spokes and are received in notches 5 formed in the ends of the spokes for holding the bands in position. A covering 6 of metal is applied to the hubs 2 for forming a bottom or base upon which the mail or articles are supported.

Connected to the alternate spokes and extending transversely of the carrier are partitions 7, against which the mail matter is packed. The mail is inserted through an opening 8 form-ed in the cylindrical casing, and packed against one of the partitions between the covering or bottom and the bands 4-. After the mail matter has been inserted between the spokes and partition or between two of the partitions, the carrier is rotated by turning a wheel 10 mounted on the shaft on the exterior of the casing. A spring 15 is connected to the casing in such a manner that it bears against one of the bands 4% to act as a friction brake for the cylinder and hold it in the position to which it is turned by the wheel 10.

The box is intended for use by rural carriers, and by this arrangement of the parts, the carrier while at the station can pack his mail against the partitions of the car rier in such a manner that the mail matter for each stop along the road will come into place beneath the opening 8 as the wheel 10 is turned. The box can also be used by several persons for receiving their mail matter, or it can be used by a single individual, and, if necessary, the several compartments formed between the partitions can be used for each individual using the box, or letters can be placed in one of the compartments and papers in another. The bands prevent the mail matter from falling into the easing, and it will always be held and retained on the carrier or drum.

A cover 11 is hinged to the casing for closing the opening, and a lock 12 is provided for fastening the cover to the casing.

Brackets 13 are connected to the casing for fastening the box upon a post, or hooks let formed on the brackets can be used for suspending the box from any suitable sup port.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a mail box the combination \vitha casing having an opening in the wall thereof, of a shaft journaled in the casing, hubs mounted on the shaft, spokes connected to the hubs having notches in the ends thereof, partitions connected to alternate spokes, a covering on the hubs forming a bottom on which the mail matter is supported, bands connected to the peripheries of the spokes and secured in the notches formed at the ends of the spokes forming a means for holding the articles inserted through the opening in the casing and between the bands and between the spokes and onto the covering, and a spring connected to the casing and engaging one of the bands for frictionally opposing the rotation of the shaft.
