v,jorwed Pedal Mechanism; of which the folfic lowing isa i'uli, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to self-playing pianos and similar musical instruments7 and its object is to provide a new and improved pedal mechanism arranged to permit, of conveniently folding it inside of the base of thev instrument end at the same time closing the pedal opening in the. front of the base or to allow oi' swinging the pedal mechanism out- Ward into extended position and 'at the same `time 'close the pedal opening so that the base oi tne casing is closed and the interior of the casing is protected against dust Whether the pedal mechanism is in folded or in extended position. For tflie purpose mentioned use is made cfa pedal mechanism connected Witli an outer and an innerdoon for closing the pedal opening in the'front of tile casing 'when the pedal mechanism is in folded or extended position.
A practical embodiment ot the invention is.` represented in tne accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a plan view oi' the pedal mechanism as applied and in extended position, the front of the base being shown in section on the line 1-1 oit Fig. 2; Fig. is a transverse section of the same on the line 2H? oi l; 8 is a similar view of the saine showing the parte in folded position; and Liis a sectional elevation oi' one of the pedals, the section being on the line le-4, oi'
my e' i f i 1. f1 .i le casing io .i p ayer piano o1 oiei .i'nilar musical instrument is provided in the front A of the oase with a pedal openinff fig adapted to be closed by an outer door ii pivotally connected at its lower end by hinges C to tlie front ifi at tlie bot/toni of tlie pedal opening A2.' Pedals i) are connected 'by singes E to tbe rear face ot' the outer door B near the free end thereof so that when the door B is swung downward into the position shown in Vl and 2 then tiie pedals if) can be readily engaged by the 'feet oi the player to act-nate the saine. The pedals D are provided at their under sides 4Witli spring arms l? forming guideways for slides G to slide on, the said slides G being connected by transverse links H 'to rock arms I'ulcrumed on the rod d supported by brackets el" attached to the iront A at the inner face thereof, as plainly indicated in the drawings. The rock arms l' are pressed on by springs ll carriedfby the rod J to nor@- mally hold the pedal D in tne raised posi tion illustrated in Fig. 2, and the said roclr arms I with the bellows i( for actuating the saine on alternately pressing and releasing' the pedals The outer door B is connected by a link L with the free end of an inner door N connected at its upper end by hinges@ to tlie are connected in the usual manner inner face of the from ifi. so that tlie inner door N swings into a closed position Whenever tlie outer door B swings into open position, as will be readily understood by reference to Figs. l and 2, and when the outer door B is swung upward into a closed 'posi` tion the inner door N swings inward into an open position, indicated in Fig. 3. Thus tlie pedal opening .of is closed whether the pedal mechanism is in an extended or in a folded position.
The back of tlie inner door N is provided with a bracket N connected with one end o't an upwardly extending lever P connected the inner face of the iront A', and the upper end ot' the lever P is pivotally connected by a link Q 'witli a liand lever l ttul/ruined atI R on the outer t'acc of the front ii" so thaty tbe said lever R is under ille control of lie player lo enable lielatter [o impart: swingingr motion to the lever lt willi a view to impart a `swinring motion to tlie lever P whereby the inner door lil may beswung into an open position and in doing so cause an upward swinging movement o5 the outer door i3 by the connection of tlie .link L between the doors N und ln a like manner the door "can be swung' downward into a closed position on actuating `the lever R in a reverse direction so as to swing the door d `inward into an open position as shown in Fig. 2.o The icvervlty is adapted to be locked in position when tlie'door E is closed an( L Four i1 is o ien iv a a cli Si held on lthe i U 1 v c t the onler face of ihe :irene ifi", es plainly indiczied in Fig, l.
Eli; is understood the link Q previ onsly mensionecl eniends through n small opening in he front A and the link H of the pedal mechanism entends hrongh the pedal openin.y and also 4through slos liz formed in the :free end oi2 the inner door N ai. ihe ginie the leiter is in closed posiiiion.
The spring; arms forming "che guide- Wsjs for ihe slides G- are limiied by stops held on che free ends the pedals D, L. siogo ings U are arranged on the 'Linder sides ci che pedals@` distance from the iiree ends of "che s ig F so "oo hold he slides G aigjziinso sliding inovemen on the when elcemately pressing and reihe pedals i! or octueiing ne belw i nders'ood chst when a pedsl is se then he pedal D moves toward the iii-ee end of the spring afm F as the leiter .is held against movementby the resistance of the link H until the pedal D engages ihe slide G, sind hen ihe further downward swinging movemen of the pedal carries the slide Gr along so es to cause the link H to ao tuae the roclfL erin l and consequently Idie bellows K. lililhen che player releases the pressure on the pedal. D the spring,- :ii-m l? returns to normal posiion against 1bhe stop lirom che foregoing ii; will seen that during the actuating of the pedal ehe corresponding slide G is heldegainsiJ sliding movei'nent on the arm F owing;l to the slide CT abutting fag-ainsi; the stop U, but when ille operatoi'swings the lever 'R inward into closed position and causes the door B to swing upward then the slide G slides down the spring erin F so as zo allow the pedal to swing inl-o va folded position on closing che door l and opening the door N.
Having thus described my invention, l claim as new sind desire to secure by Letters lietent:
