Description

T. P. PHILIPPI. SWING FRAME GRINDER.
APPLICATION IILED AUG. 23, 1912.
Fig.1.
inventor: TI. Philippi bX flbb'Ys.
Patented Mar. 4, 1913.
my AVAILABLE 6 THEODORE F. PHILIPPI. OF EAST ST. LOUTS, ILLINOIS.
SWING-FRAME GRINDER.
To all u'lmm [If mug coin-crn Be it known that l. THEODURE i lnirirri. a citizen of the United States of .\merica, and a resident of East St. Louis. count of St. Clair, and State of lllinois. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swing-l rame Grinders. of which the following is a full. clear. and exact description. reference being had to the accompanying drawings. forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a swing frame grinder and has for its object .the production of a grinder. carried by a pendant and a connterlmlance associated with the pendant so as to allow the grinder to be shifted for a considerable distance with very little labor on the part of the operator.
includes details of \\'lll be. hereinatter The invention also construction which pointed out.
Figure I is a side elevation of a swing frame grinder embodying the. features of my invention. Fig. II is a perspective view showing the pendant suspension and the counterweight.
In the accompanying drawings: designates a rock-able hanger preferably composed of a horizontal beam 1 and hanger rods 2 secured to-said beam. The hanger is supported by a hook 23 passing through an eye 4 on the hanger. A pendant l3 pivoted to the hanger rods is provided with arms 5 having trunnions which extend into the elongated eyes (i at the lower ends of the hanger rods 2. in operating thegrinder the pendant is swung about the axis of the trunnions and these truniiions are free to roll in the elongated eyes t5.
.\ horizontal arm 7, extending from the lower end of the pendant, is pivoted to said pendant at 8 and provided at its free end with a grinding wheel 9. shaft it). secured to the grinding wheel is mounted in bearings ti and provided with a pulley 11. A. motor 12 for operating the grinding wheel is carried by the upper end of the pendant.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 4, 1913.-
Application filedAugnst 23. 1912. Serial No. 716,626.
l3 and ll designate transmission pulleys located at the junction of the pendant B and arm 7. Power is transmitted from the power pulley 15 on the motorto the grind ing wheel t) through the medium of a belt: lt' passing around the pulleys 1t and 15, and a ttf0lltl belt 17 passing around the pulleys ll and lit.
The means for counterbalancing the free end of the arm 7 comprises a lever 18 pivoted to the hanger at 19, a counterweight 20 at one end of said lever and a chain :21 connecting the opposite end of said lever to the arm 7.
In the practical use of this apparatus, the operator engages the handles at the free end of the arm wheel along the surface of the work. A very objectionable feature in the usual types of swing frame grinders is the labor required to swing the arm and pendant. This renders it dit'tieult to operate the grinder aml limits the stroke of the swinging frame to a slight distance. Therefore, a very important feature of my invention is that weight at the lower portion of thependant is counterlnilanced by a weight above the pivot of the pendant. 'lhis weight is preferably formed by the motor and motor 7 and swings the grindingsupport which lie in a higher plane than the pendant pivot.
I claim A s'wing l'rame grinder comprising a' rockable' hanger, a pendant pivoted to said rockable hanger. an arm pivoted to the lower end of said pendant, a grinder carried by said arm, a motor for operating said grinder secured to said pendant. said motor'
