AUGUSTIN MITCHELL. 0T? NEWT YQREQ,
SIGARETTE-CASE.
Application filed August 18. 19H. Serial Km Gn?? To ZZ 107mm- 4z' may concern:
Re it known that l, AUGUs'vm l'vIITei-nniil, :l oit-izen of the Russian Empire. and a. resident of the city, county. end State of New York, have invented Certain nov.v und useiul .improvements in Cigarette-Ceses, oi which the following is n specification.
rthis invention reizxtes to cigarette euses :intl the object of the invention is to 'provide n 'novel opening mechanism 'whereby the ease is-automatically opened by u Sliding movement of the one side of the ease relatively to the other side.
' Another object to construct the opening` mechanism in such a manner that, the same is invisible and the cigarette ease suoli presents not-hing` unusual in its :ippearanee.
To this end my invention is embodied in a cigarette ease composed of two sides hinged together so to permit of the one side sliding relatively to the other side mtl provnieol with e eonoeuled opening mechanism Within 'the hinge for automatically opening the cese Lifter the` two sides have the cigarette holder.
ln the drawing the numerals and 6 represe. t the two sides ofthe ease and which are `provitied with the-tietrinil 7 to permit the euse to oe closed 'tiglitiy and.
also to facilitate the sliding movement above referred to. nsicle the rim the sides are ttished to' provide space for the cigarettes. The side 5 is provided with a recess S 'and the siie i3 has secured thereto a enten 9, the hooi; 10 of `which engages in the recess in en obvious manner. 'The catch is tlisengetgecl from the recess b v a sliding' n'ioveinenty suiicient to free the hooi: 10 from the recess.
To the side '5 et the. inner thereof, there is` seenred a iplurality othinge ears 11. @ne of these'is marked 12 and is of a. greater inside. diameter than the. others. .For pmqaoses of appearance the hinge tional view on line 2%.3 of :intl l 1s n detail view of the ineens for liftingtetented Meer., itf.
eers il are oli ot' the same length, While the two end ears are of a. different length, but alike, es shown. To the other side 6 there is seeuretln' plurality of hinge eers 13 of the seme insitie diameter es the eers l?. but of e less outside diameter. The eers 12% are shorter than the eers ll shown. and over the ezrs i3 are fitted the ,ifelse ear sleeves le.
l5 is the cigarette holderl provided withL tivo hinge eers l5 and l?. The eer 16 is the seme inside and outside diameter as ythe ears 1l. The ear 1T is similarly Constructed except that the inside diameter is narrowed as at i8 into a square aperture which is continued through 'e short shank 19.
Q0 is tubularlhinge pin which its inside the several hinge eers as shown and` @buts the hinge' eerv 17 of the holder l5 {itt-ing outside the round shank l0. 21 is al 'pin which extends aperture 18 the springs are twisted asshown and secured at, the enels by Wedges and solder, but inside the aperture .X8 the springs eannotloe twisted because of the square cross section, the opening of Whien is Completely filled by the springs.
9 6 is e coiled spring insitle the hinge eer end'ortside thehinge pin 21. The spring tends to keep the two sides of the ease in nlineinent as it expands between the eer' 'l2 and an eer i3, keeping the partsfin the @o `sition shewn in Figs.- l and 2. Et- Wiil Enrt-her he observed that es' the ens of faire' springe 24 seeurlto the hinge pins and. are not tw a tentlencg.r to force the eigerete heiiei 15 to the right in the drawing and es the xholder presses against thesile 6, the
isA that Ythe springs 24 'tend eonstenty to open the ease. v
To open the ease the skies ere movecl prallel in opposite-direetions distance the length of the spaces Q2 .and Thismovement is enoug. to free t.h` mol: i0 from recess Senti theeese opensiintier the in tlneneeV esten .in the aperture l, they have i l5 ris ythis invention ot' the springs 24 to a position indicated in Fig. 8. The opening movement is limited by the meeting oi the inner edges of the sides at 2i'. lt will also be noted that the cigarettes are prevented from falling out asA the holder l5 is still under pressure by the springs 2st. @ne particular advantage of this construction resides in the fact that the case may be opened bythe use of one hand only when the sides may be moved parallel by ii slight pressure of the thumb on the one side and the other four fingers on the otherl side of the case, which then opens gently and lies in the hollow of the hand after which a cigarette may easily be Apulled out from under theholder.
if desired the hinge ear 17 may be provided with a lug 28 and the adjacent hinge ear 1l be provided With an butt-ing lug 29, as shown in. Fig. 4. This permits of the side 6 being moved a little away from the holder 15, thus completely freeing the cigarettes "from the pressure of the holder. But.- of course.' the use of both hands is net esser)v to produce this result.
in assembling the case the following I lFirst the holder placed in its proper side t3 with the sleeves 14 to get theshank'l) inside the one ear i3, andafter the coiled spring 2G has been placed. the hinge-ears of the two sides are placed in .the position shown. Thereafter the tw'ovtubular hinge method may be followed:
pins may be slipped into place and inall)7 the steel springs4 are secured.
The above vis thought to clearly explain and the construction thereof. t will be seen from Fig. l that there is' nothing' to indicate that the hinge connecting the sides is other than an ordinary hinge. The sliding movement is possible inserted, twisted and l ears 14.
position i-n the i prismg two sides because of theshorter ears 13 on the Aone side which may move inside the false hinge then once the case is closed the coiled spring keeps the hook Within the recess S and as soon the hook is released the springs 24 force the case open. For the purpose of the claims the hinge ears 1l and 12 may be considered as one part of the 'hinge and the hinge earslBl as the other 'part of the hinge, While the tubes 20 and 21 may be read as constituting the hinge pin.
Various changes may. of course, be made within the scope of the claims and the principle of the invention.
that I claim and desire to secure by Lenters Patent is:
l. The combination with a casing comprising two sides, hinge ears secured to the latter, the hinge ears on the one side being shorter than those on the other side permittinga movement of the sides relatively to each other. ahinge pin connecting said hinge ears. sleeves shorter hinge ears. a member pivoted on said hinge pin and springs Within the latter for' pressing the said member against the one side to open the said casing.
. 2. The combination With va casingcomconnected by a. hing., and means Within the said hinge tor permitting a slidingmovement of the said sideswrelativelv to each otherand in a direction parallel to the axis of said hinge Jfor the purpose of opening .the said' easing.
n. testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses, v
