Description

HY. P. MOFARLAND.
GATE HINGE. A
, APPLICATION FILED JULY 13, '1912. 1,054,928, Patented Mar. 4, 1913.
[NI/ENTOR l P .ma l'arland- HARVEY r. MCEARLAND, or MIL'roN, IOWA.
GATE-HINGE.
To all whom t may conce/m Be it known that I, 'HARVEY P. MCFAR- LAND, a` citizen of the United States, residing at Wilton, in the county of Van Buren and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate- Hinges7 of which the following is a specifica-` tion, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to gatejhinges and has special referencel to a hinge adjustable laterally in order `to accommodate shrinkage, wear, or other variations in the width of a gate.
Theprincipal object of the invention is to provide an improved and simplified form of hinge of this description. i
Another object of the invention is to provide hinges of this description wherein the topand bottom hinges will be independently adjustable so that any sag of the gate atits free edge may be relieved by proper ad-y justment of one or both of said hinges.
kVlith the above and other objects in view, this invention consists in general of certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter `fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings like char.- acters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and Figure 1 is a side elevation of a hinge constructed in accordance with this invention. median horizontal Fig. 3 is an end view of such a hinge. 4C is a section on the line 4--1- of Fig. 2.
In the construction of a hinge in accordance with this invention two members are provided one of which is formed integral with a base 10. From the corners of the Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section therethrough. Fig.
ybase project perforated ears 11 for the reof openings 17 adapted to be brought to registry with the openings 14 so that the pin Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 709,226.
15 may hold the tongue from longitudinal movement with reference to the iirst-men tioned member. On this tongue is provided a head 18 wherefrom projects a hinge ear 19 having a suitable opening 20 therein for the purpose of receiving the pintle of the opposite hinge member, the latter not being deemed necessary to be shown as it is of the ordinary variety.
It will be readily understood that when this hinge is in position on a gate and the post or other support and the gate shrinks or wears so'that it no longer properly engages the opposite post itis merelyA necessary to remove the pin 15 from theropening 17 and slide the tongue 16 outward until proper adjustment is had whereupon the pin may be inserted in the nearest opening 17. It will also be understood that in case the gate sags the lower pin of the two hinges normally supporting the gate may be withdrawn and the tongue adjusted to raise the free end of the gate. If this adjustment is not enough the upper pin 15 may be withdrawn and the tongue slid in so that by properly manipulating the two, correct adjustment may be had.
There has thus been provided a simple and eiiicient device of the kind described, and for the purpose specified.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, Vis
In a device of the kind described, a member including a base, L-shaped ianges disposed along opposite edges of said base, a bridge connecting said flanges between their ends, attaching ears extending from said base, said base and bridge being provided with alined pin receiving openings, a tongue slidable between said flanges and beneath said bridge, said tongue being provided with a series of` spaced pin receiving openings adapted for selective alinement with the openings in the base and bridge, a head on saidV tongue, a hinge ear projecting from said head, and a pin adapted to enter the openingsin the bridge, base, and tongue.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afIiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
