CHISEL-GAGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 4,1913.
Application filed August 7, 1912. Serial No. 713,933.
' ings.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in chisel gages and relates more particularly to those of the type which are adapted to be removably secured to the blade of a chisel.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a gage of this nature, which when positioned upon the chisel, will limit the cutting depth of the same.
A further object of the invention is to provide a removable chisel gage which may be easily and quickly secured in position and which may be readily adjusted so as to permit the chisel to cut channels of various depths.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a chisel gage which shall be particularly adapted for use in forming channels for the reception of hinges of doors and similar objects.
The invention also aims to generally improve devices of this nature to render them more useful, practical and commercially desirable.
With these and other objects in view, as shall become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combina tion and arrangement of parts as I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view of my invention attached to a chisel. Fig; 2 is an end elevation. Fig. 3 is a side elevation and Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view, one of the adjusting screws being shown in elevation.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, 1 designates a U-shaped body member having a base 2 and the parallel arms 3 which extend at right angles to the base. An angular guide frame 4 comprising a central offset portion 5 and longitudinally extending arms 6, is adjustably secured to the free ends of the arms 3 of the body member by means of thumb screws 7. These thumb screws are 5 rotatably held within the circular openings 8 formed in the laterally extending lugs 9 carried by the oflset portion 5. The lower ends of the thumb screws are reduced in diameter and are seated in circular sockets 10 formed in the arms 6 of the guide frame. A transverse pin 11 extends through each of the thumb screws and by bearing against the underside of one of the lugs, 9, prevents longitudinal movement of the screw. The free ends of the arms 3 of the body member 1 are formed with threaded openings through which the thumb screws 7 pass, and it will be seen that by rotating said screws, the body member 1 may be adjusted vertically with respect to the angular guide frame 4. The base 2 of the body member is formed with a longitudinal slot 12 in which the blade 13 of a chisel may be adjustably secured by means of the set screws 14:.
In using my improved gage for the purq pose of letting in hinges on doors, it is customary to first mark upon the door the position in which the hinge is to be placed and then kerf the door so as to form the walls of the channel which is to receive the hinge. After this has been done, the depth to which the chisel shall cut is fixed by a proper adjustment of the thumb screws 7 and then the gage is placed against the door so as to bring the guide arms 6 flatly against the face of the same. The chisel is then forced inwardly and cuts a channel in which the hinge is positioned. By using the same adjustment another channel of the same depth may be formed in the door jamb so that the door will hang properly when secured in position.
It is to be understood that while I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, slight changes in construction and design may be made without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1- 1. A chisel gage comprising a U-shaped body member, the base of which is formed with a longitudinally extending slot and the free ends of the arms of said body member being provided with threaded openings, chisel fastening means projecting within said slot, a guide frame having a central offset portion formed with longitudinally extending lugs having circular openings therein and thumb screws projecting through the openings in the lugs and through the openings formed in the arms of the body member.
2. A chisel gage comprising a U-shaped body member, the base of which is formed with a longitudinal slot and the arms of which are provided adjacent their free ends with thread-ed openings set screws carried by the base of the body member and projecting within the slot formed therein, a guide frame having oppositely extending arms and a central ofi'set portion connecting said arms, the offset portion being provided with longitudinally extending apertured lugs spaced from the arms of the guide frame, and thumb screws passing through said apertured lugs and having their ends seated in sockets formed in the guide frame, said thumb screws passing through the threaded openings formed in the arms of Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. C.
