To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WINFIELD B. W1L- LIAMS, citizen of the United States, residing at l/Vaxahachie, in the county of Ellis and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Juice-Extractors, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in juice extractors.

The object of the invention .is to improve the device illustrated in the Letters Patent issued to me January 3rd, 1911 and numbered 980,466.

One of the improved features is a detachable strainer arranged to be readily removed from its holder for cleansing or renewal.

Another feature resides in the construction for operating the strainer which includes a handle-sleeve so connected to the strainer holder that a slight turn serves to swing the strainer into the desired position.

A further object is to provide a device that will be strong, durable, efiicient, simple and comparatively inexpensive to construct, also one in which the several parts will not be likely to get out of working order.

With the above and other objects in view the invention has relation to certain novel features of construction and operation, an example of which is described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Figure 1 is a plan view, Fig. 2 is a side elevation, Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view on the line ss of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is a detail of one of the jaws showing the strainer thereunder and the handle and sleeve in cross section, and Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional detail of the sleeve and its associate handle.

In the drawings the numerals 1 and 2 designate the hinged members of an ordinary juice extractor which is also provided with a guard plate 3 attached to oneof said members. On the side of the member 1 a strainer holder 4 is mounted. This holder is provided with a bent socket 5 arranged to receive the lip 6 of a metal strainer 7. The holder is preferably formed of stiif wire bent into the shape shown in the drawing. The strainer 7 is dished or concaved and has it perforations in its deepest portion. The lip 6 is bent at a sharp angle to the strainer so that the latter may fit snug against the bottom of the extractor. The socket 5 fric tionally holds the lip so that it is merely necessary to exert a little pressure to remove the strainer.

The holder 4 is hinged on the member 1 by hangers 8 and is provided with a crank shaft extension 9 whereby the said holder may be swung to bring the strainer into or out of operative position. On the handle of the member 1 I provide a metal sleeve 10 conforming to the general contour of said handle, but loose enough to be turned freely. At the inner end of the sleeve an out-turned lug'll is provided and formed with a slot 12. A cylindrical cap 14 is screw threaded on the end of the crank shaft 9. This cap is screwed on the shaft and passed through the slot 12 so that an annular flange 15 on said cap will engage the side of the lug opposite to the holder 4 and thus retain the sleeve against outward thrust on the handle, but permitting the sleeve to be removed by detaching the cap from the shaft. The cap bears in the slot as shown in Fig. 4. When the strainer is swung under the members 1 and 2 the cap is at the inner end of the slot. To swing the strainer out from under said members it is merely necessary to rotate the sleeve 10 which swings the lug 11, thus causing the cap to ride outward and inward in the slot. The cap being screwed on the crank shaft swings the latter thus swinging the strainer. By rotating the sleeve in the opposite direction the strainer may be swung under the members. It is to be noted that when the strainer is at the center of its swing the cap is at the outer end of the slot.

I wish to call attention to the fact that only a partial turn of the sleeve is necessary to swing the strainer. About a one-quarter of a rotation of the sleeve is all that is required to swing the strainer into either position. It is further to be noted that this turning of the sleeve is almost a natural operation in operating the extractor. When the operator is forcing the members 1 and 2 together to squeeze the fruit there is a tendency to twist the handles toward each other and such a tendency would cause the rotation of the sleeve whereby the strainer would be swung under the members. When the members are swung apart to eject the fruit the tendency is to twist in the opposite direction to that named which would result in the strainer being swung outward.

The sleeve is readily removed for cleansing by taking off the cap and the strainer is detachable as described, thus making a sanitary device which may be maintained in good condition.

What I claim, is:

1. In a strainer apparatus, a holder arranged to be hinged on one of the jaws of a juice extractor, a metal strainer having detachable connection with the holder, a rotatable handle sleeve arranged to receive one of the handles of the juice extractor, the holder having an off-set extension, the sleeve having a projection receiving the extension of the holder, and a connection between the projection of the sleeve and the extension of the holder.

2. In a swinging strainer apparatus for hinged juice extractors, a holder, a metal strainer removably secured to the holder, and a rotatable handle sleeve having operating connection with the holder.

The combination with a juice extractor having hinged pressure members provided with elongated handles, of a strainer holder hinged on one of the members, a metal strainer connected to the holder, and a rotatable sleeve incasing one of the handles and having swinging connection with the holder.

The combination with a juice extractor having hinged pressure members provided with elongated handles, of a holder hinged to one of the members, a socket provided in the holder, a metal strainer, a lip extending from the strainer and detaehably engaging in the socket, a crank-shaft extension on the holder, a metal sleeve surrounding one of the handles, a lug on the inner end of the handle having a slot, and a cap fitting on the crank shaft and engaging in the slot. of the lug.

5. In a juice extractor, a pair of hinged jaws, handles projecting from the jaws, a strainer hinged on one of the jaws and arranged to swing, and a rotatable member mounted on one of the handles and having swinging connection with the strainer.
