UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JESSE G. VINCENT, OF DETROIT, MICI IIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO BURROUGHS ADDING MA- CHINE COMPANY, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
POWER-DRIVE FOR ADDING-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 25,1913.
Original application filed August 13, 1906, Serial No. 330,466. Divided and this application filed January troit, in the county of lVayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Power-Drives for Adding-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This application is a division of my prior application filed August 13, 1906, Serial No. 330,466. Here, as there, the power drive takes the form of an electric motor which during use of the adding machine runs continuously and is adapted to be connected to and disconnected from the adding machine .by a spring-closed clutch under control of manual and automatic detent devices, the manual equipmentenabling the user of the machine to operatively connect the mbtor thereto at will and the automatic detent equipment insuring the proper timing of cycles of operation. It is desirable that the connection be not effected between the drive and the machine unless the power has already been turned on and the motor is running, for otherwise the motor would have to pick up the load before gaining any headway.
The aim of the present invention is to prevent the user of the machine from effecting an operative connection between the drive and the machine, as by operating the manually contrclled detent devices, unless the power is already on. The present embodiment of my invention being one which pertains to the use of an electric motor, I here arrive at the result by putting the starting connections or detent devices under control of the switch for turning on and off the electric. current.
In the drawings which accompany and form part of this specification, Figure 1 1s a partial side elevation of an adding machine with electric drive and an equipment for carrying out the present invention, some of the parts appearing in section. Fig. 2 is a detached view of the electric switch with the stem of the turn button in section and in the opposite position to that shown in Fig. 1, this view also including a portion of'the detent connections. Fig, 3 is a vertical transverse section taken substantially on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
It will be unnecessary to describe in any Serial No. 602,423.
detail the adding machine itself. The type of machine here indicated is the familiar Burroughs machine such as disclosed in numerous prior patents, of which it will suffice to mention Number 858,548, issued July 2, 1907, on an invention of mine which also related to the application of an electric drive to this type of adding machine. The reference numeral 300 designates the oscillating handle shaft of such a machine, which shaft carries the usual full stroke sector 311 connectedby a link 366 to a crank arm 110 on another oscillating shaft 100 journaled in the rear of the base of the machine. Reference numeral 180 designates one of the usual operating springs which connects said crank arm to the base of the machine, and the reference numeral 380 designates a power transmitting spring connecting said crank arm to a third oscillating shaft 800, which is also a familiar element of the Burroughs adding machine. For operating the machine by hand a handle of the usual character is applied to the shaft 300. For operating by -power in the present form of drive, connections are not made directly to the shaft 800 as in theconstruction of my said prior Patent No. 858,548, but to the shaft 100 the same as shown in my original ap plication No. 330,466, and also in my prior application No. 329,386. These connections comprise a crank arm 2 secured to said shaft 100, an adjustable pitman 3, one member of which is coupled to said crank arm 2, and a radius link 4 coupled to the other member of said pitman and pivoted to the gear casing 5 of the drive equipment. The numeral 6 designates the driven shaft of this equip-' ment, which shaft carries a snail-back cam 7 operating against a roller v8 carried by the itman 3.
The shaft 6 has secured to it a clutch disk 9 recessed on its periphery for clutching purposes as shown at 10 in Fig. 1 and embraced by a clutch ring 11 which is secured to a worm wheel 12 loose upon the shaft 0. see Fig. 3. The worm 13 meshes with said wheel and is fixed to a shaft 14, the latter uniting with the armature shaft of the electric motor 15. A driving connection between the ring 11 and disk 10 is effected through the medium of clutch blocks 10, one of which is shown in Fig. 1 occupying recess 10 of the disk. 'A circular plate or disk 17 which is loose upon'a collar of the lar plate or disk 17. Thus the latter carries a segmental stop block 20 shown in dotted line in Fig.1, which block normally abuts a pair of detent pieces 21 and 22..
formed as heads upon arbors or short shafts 21 and 22 (Fig. 3), the engaging portionsof said heads being seml-circular as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1. On the outer end of shaft 21 there is secured a gear segment 21 and secured to the corresponding end of the shaft 22' is a similar and intermeshing gear segment 22 forming part of a bell crank lever. A forwardly extending arm 22-of the latter is coupled to the lower end of a bar 23, the latterextending up past the handle shaft 300 and to a point under that portion of the casing of the, adding machine which constitutes the right hand side-bar 24 of the key-board panel.- The upper end of this vertical bar 23 is longitudinally slotted to receive a stud 25 on the rear-end of a lever 26 which is con nectedby a spring 27 to the lower portion of said vertical bar as shown in Fig.1. Said lever 26 is mounted'on a fixed pivot 26 under the above mentioned portion of the machine casing and a second lever 27 mounted upon a similar pivot 27 has a forked arm extending forward of said pivot and embracing a stud 26 on the lever 26. Upwardl extending branches of said levers 26 and 2 are connected by a spring 28 which normally depresses the rear arm of the lever .26 so that the vertical bar 23 is held down and consequently the detents 21 and 22 both engage the stop block 20 and the clutch remains "open.
Reference numeral 30 designates a starting or drive controlling bar which extends along the right hand side of the keyboard and has legs 31 passing loosely through slots in the panel bar 24 and being additionally guided for up and down movement by pins or studs 32 which pass through slots in said them from the stop block 20, whereupon the spring 19 thrusts the clutch piece 16 into effective engagement with the clutch ring 11 and clutch disk 9, and if the motor is running the shaft 6 will be rotated and the adding machine put through an operation.
Coming now to equipment for embodying the present invention, reference numeral 40 designates in general an on and off electric switch of any suitable type, the numeral 41 designating the turn button thereof which, as is customary, requires a quarter of a rotation to change the switch from off to on, and vice versa. For the purposes of the present invention a portion of the stem of said turn button is made oblong or rectangular in cross section as illustrated b dotted lines in Fig. 1 and in cross section in Fig. 2. This portion 42 of said stem occupies a key-hole slot in a link 43 which at its forward end iscoupled to a downwardly extending branch 22 of the aforesaid detent bell crank. The said keyhole slot comprises a circular portion 43 in which the turn but-ton stem 42 may rotate and said slot also comprises narrow portions 43 and 43 of substantially the same lateral dimension as the smaller cross-sectional dimension of said turn button stem.
When the adding machine is at normal the link 43 occupies a rearward position with the circular portion 43* of its keyhole slot around the turn button stem42,
and if the current is off the rectangular por tion of this stem stands crosswise of the link as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1 so that it looks the link against lengthwise movement and therefore obviously prevents disengagement of the detents21 and 22 from the stop block 20 and so prevents closing of the clutch. However, when the current is turned .on the rectangular portion 'of the turn button stem aline's with the narrow portions of the key-hole slot, as shown in Fig. 2, so that it no longer locks the link 43 and the obstruction to the closing of the clutch is removed. Thus it will be seen that the above stated object of the invention is effectively obtained, though it is of course to be understood that the invention is not necessarily limited to this particular form of embodiment.
Means for properly timing the cycles of operation of the adding machine, though forming no part of the present invention, may be briefly pointed out. A forwardly and upwardly extending branch 23 of the vertical bar 23 confronts a roller stud 311 of the sector 311, so that as soon as the machine gets under way the bar 23 will be forcibly returned to its normal position, rocking the detents 21 and 22 again into the path of the stop block 20. The other branch of said starting bar which appearsas a short finger or lug 23 is for the purpose of preventing an application of the handle to the shaft 300 when the detents are displaced and, vice versa, for preventing displacing of the detents when the handle is rotatively engaged with said shaft 300.
The numeral 265 designates the familiar total key of the Burroughs adding machine, which key surmounts the usual bell crank lever 227, the latter being secured to a rock shaft from the right hand end of which depends an arm 227*. This arm is con nected by a link 140 to a crank arm. 141 on a rock shaft 142 which carries an arm 143 having a segmental outer end or head 144 lying adjacent the forwardly extending arm of the aforesaid lever 126. The latter has a lock block 269 which, when the starting bar 30 is depressed and the total key is at normal, passes down along the rear end of the head 144 to prevent an operation of the .total key while the starting bar is so depressed. :Vice versa, if the total key is first depressed-the head 144 moves under the lock block 26 and prevents operation of the starting bar 30 until the total key is fully depressed, when the forward end of the head 144 will have passed to the rear of said lock block.
What I claim is:
l. The combination with the prime mover of the machine proper; of a power drive having means for turning on and off the motive force, and means for operatively connecting the drive with said prime mover at will with provisions for preventing such coflnnection when the motive force is turned 0 2.
