Application filed October 1 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES V. BELLAMY, a citizen of England, residing at Vancouver, in the Province of British Columbia and Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Burglar-Alarms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain novel and useful improvements in burglar alarms and has particular application to an apparatus whereby an alarm will be sounded in the event of an attempt being made to effect an entrance at the protected point.
In carrying out the present invention, it is my purpose to provide a burglar alarm apparatus whereby local and distant signals will be given in the event of a door or window or the like being opened with malicious intent.
It is also my purpose to provide an alarm apparatus which will embrace the desired features of simplicity, efficiency and durability coupled with cheapness of cost in manufacture, installation and maintenance and which will o erate reliably and efficientlv for its intended purpose.
\Vith the above and other objects in View, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in and falling within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawing the figure is a diagrammatic view of an apparatus con structed in accordance with my invention.
Referrin now to the accompanying drawing in detail, the numeral 1 indicates a signal board located at a remote distance from the protected point and arranged within a police station or the like.
The numeral 2 indicates an electric circuit which includes a source of energy as a battery, 3, an audible alarm as a bell 4 located upon the premises of the point to be protected, and a visual signal as a lamp 5 disposed upon the signal board 1 at a distant point. This circuit 2 is normally open and is adapted to be closed through the medium of a suitable form of push button 6, the latter being fastened in any desired manner at an appropriate point within the protected structure. Contiguous the push button 6 is a guide way 7 suitably held in the proper position, while slidably mounted within the guide way is a plunger 8 provided with a rack surface 9 with which meshes a pinion 1O keyed upon a shaft 11 Specification of Letters Patent.

journaled in suitable bearings and equipped with a miter gear 12 meshing with the beveled teeth 13 formed on one side of a toothed gear 14, the latter being journaled in suitable bearings for rotation. In the present instance, I have shown my invention as employed for protecting a doorway, the door having fastened thereto a toothed segment 15 meshing with the teeth of the gear 14. It is conceivable, however, that my burglar alarm apparatus may be employed for protecting windows and the like.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction, mode of operation and manner of employing my invention will be readily apparent. Should the door be opened with malicious intent, the gear 14 will be rotated under the action of the toothed segment 15 and so impart movement to the shaft 1.1 through the medium of the beveled teeth 13 and the miter gear 12. Upon the rotation of the shaft 11, the plunger 8 is moved into engagement with the push button 6, through the medium of the pinion 10 and rack 11, thereby closing the circuit and energizing the local and distant signals.
A switch 16 is preferably located in. the circuit 2 so that the latter may be opened at a point remote from the push button, as when it is desired that the apparatus shall not operate.
It will be seen that I have provided a burglar alarm apparatus whereby a signal is automaticallv given in the event of an attempt being made to effect an entrance atthe protected point.
I claim:
1. In a burglar alarm, the combination with a normally open electric circuit including a source of energy and a signal, of a push button for closing said circuit, a guide way contiguous said push button, a plunger in said guide way adapted to operate the push button to close the circuit and provided with a rack surface, a shaft, a pinion on said shaft meshing with said rack surface, and means carried by a movable part of the protected structure for actuating said shaft to impart movement to the plunger and close the circuit.

In a burglar alarm, the combination with a normally open electric circuit including a source of energy, local and distant signals, and a push button for closing the circuit, of a guide Way contiguous said push button, a plunger in said guide Way adapted to operate the push button to close the circuit and provided with a rack surface, a shaft, a pinion keyed to said shaft and meshing With said rack surface, a beveled gear having beveled teeth on one side meshing With the first-mentioned beveled gear, and a segment carried by a movable part of the protected structure and rotating said toothed gear to impart movement to the shaft whereby the plunger may operate to close the circuit.
