WITNESSES g /7d/00//// fiazZ v UNITED STATES 1 Fri-TENT on MALCOLM BAILEY, OF BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA, ASSIGNOB OF ONE-HALF T0 WILLIAM BAILEY, JR, 015' MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE.
DENTAL INSTRUMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb.'25, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that I, MALCOLM BAILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Birmingham, in the county of Jefferson and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dental Instruments, of which the following is a specification. V
.The present invention relates'to im rovements 1n dental instruments, and em odies a combined mouth gag and mirror, for use in dental or surgical operations.
The object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character by means of which the mouth may be held in open position to permit access to the teeth in dental operations, or to the throat in surgical operations, and as an aid to these operations the mirror may be adjusted to the most advantageous position.
The instrument is designed to be held bodily in the month between the upper and lower jaws, so that, after being properly adjusted in the mouth to reflect the object to be operated upon, there is no liability of the mirror being moved from its proper position, even though the patient should move his head.
The utilization of my device eliminates many objections and diificulties encountered in the performance of surgical and dental operations that are due to the nature of the instruments now in use.
The invention consists essentially in the novel combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter specified and more clearly pointed out in the claim.
- In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one example of the physical embodiment of my invention constructed according to the best mode I have so far de vised or the practical application of the principles of the invention.
Figure 1 is a plan view of an instrument embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an edge view of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing the flexibility of the mir ror bracket or support.
In the preferred embodiment of my invention the mouth mirror 1 is supported at the end of the flexible bracket arm 2, the
latter comprising links 3 and headed couplings 4, to ether with the set screws5 by means of which the links and con lings or coupling bars may be adjusted an held in desired position. This construction provides a bracket arm with universal joints and the construction of the joints permits innumerable arrangements of the links and couplings, so that the arm may be bent to any desired form in order that the mirror may be located in desired position.
Themouth gag comprises the bent bar 6, the two cupped heads 7, and the cork tips 8, and the gag is connected to the bracket arm by means of a clamp member 9. The jaws 10 of the clamp member are at one end provided with concave seats to fit over the head 11 of one of the coupling bars, and a small screw 12 is employed to draw the bars into frictional contact with the head. A larger screw 13 provides means by which the clamping jaws. may be drawn into frictional contact with the bar 6 of the gag, and the members are formed with rounded seats 14 to fit about the bar. By means of this construction the clamp'member may be slipped along the bent bar to desired position and there clamped on the bar by means of the screw 13.
As before stated, many different arrangements of the bracket arm may be accomplished, and the clamp may be fixed at any point'on the bar 6, to adjust the mouth mirror to position to ex ose to the operator, by reflection, such mem rs as are to be operated upon.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
The combination with the bar of a mouth gag, a flexible sup orting bracket and a mirror, of a pair of c ampingjaws eachformed with a recessed clamping seat, a screw passing through the jaws and adapted to clamp the jaw seats on the bar, and ascrew to clamp the jaws to the bracket.
In testimon whereof I aflix my signature Witnesses:
M. L. Nnwcomn, H. A. Pnmurs.
