A. L. STROBERG.
GOLLAPSIBLE LAST.
APPMWTION IILED AUG, 2-1. 1512.
Patented Feb. 25, 1913.
i up M1207 WQJFLJM ALFRED LEONARD STROBERG. OF BROCKTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
COLLAPSIBLE LAST.
Application filed August 24, 1912.
Specification of Letters Patent.
atontcdFcb. 25,1913.
Serial No. 716.853.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, .ttrnnp LEONARD S'rnonnno, a citizen of the llnited States, residing at Brockton, in the county of Plymouth and State'ot' B'lassachusctts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Lasts, of which the following is a specification.
This inventitni relates to a last comprising a heelpart and a i orcpart hinged together to permit. a relative swinging movement of said parts, for the purpose of longitudinally contracting or collapsing and extending the last, the last also including a detachable instep block seated on the torepurt.
The invention has for its object, first, to enable the detachable block to act as a strut to prevent relative. contracting moveu'ients ot the forepart and heel-part when the last is in condition for use.
The invention also has for its object to provide {improved means for dctaclnibly locking the block in position to act as a strut.
The" invention consists in the improvements which-I iwill now proceed to describe and claim.
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents aside elevation of a last embodying my invention, the block being detached from the heel and foreparts. Fig. 2 represents a top plan view of a portion of the last, showing the parts operatively assembled. Fig. 3 represents a section online 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 represents a side view of an imple ine'nt which may be used to release the instep block.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the figures.
In the drawings, 12 represents the heelpart of my improved last, the same having at its forward end a recessed bearing face 13, and a substantially flat abutment located above and overhanging the face 13. In the forward end portion of the heel-part "is formed a vertical kerf 15 which opens into the crown of the heel-part and into the abutment 14. l v
16 represents the forepart, which is cut away at its upper portion to form ablock seat 17, and has a salient rear end face 18 which merges into the seat 17 and is formed to fit the recessedface 13 of the heel-part. The forep'art 16 is provided with a lcorf 19 which registers with the kert' .15 and opens into the seat 17 and salient rear face 18.
2t) represents a hinge-plate which is attached to the heel-part within the lccrl' 1.3 by transverse pins or rivets 2i, and projects forward trom the heel-part into the kert 19 ot the forepart. v
'22 represents a pivot pin which connects the projecting portion of the hinge-plate 20 with the .t'orcpart U3. The faces 13 and 1S and the rear portion of the l)l(l('l seat 17 are formed as indicated by Fig. l, to permit relative swinging movements of the heel and l'orcparts for the purpose of longiti'idinully contracting the last, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. l, and longitudinally extending the last, as indicated by .t'ull lines. The locking-plate 20 is provided with a lock ing shoulder 23, adapted to engage a complemental shoulder on a lockingplate on the instep block, as hereinafter described.
2-1 represents the instep block, which entirely detachable from the above-described parts, and has a bottom face 25 formed to lit the seat 17, and a rear face 26 formed to bear on the abutment 14, when the last is extended. .The block is provided at its rear end portion with a vertical kerf 27, which opens through the bottom face 525 and end face 26, and registers with the kerf 15 in the heel-part, and the lx'Ulf l?) in the fore-part. 28 represents a locking plate which is pivoted to the block 24- within the kerf 27, and has a projecting portion 28 adapted to enter the kerl 15 in the heel-part, and another projecting portion 28" adapted to enter the keri 19 in the forepart. Thelocking-plate is also'provided with a locking shoulder 30, adapted to engage the shoulder 23 of the hinge plate 20, as shown by Fl". 3. The spring 31 normally holds the locking plate 28 in the position shown by Figs. 1 and 3. the shoulder 30 being thus adapted to spring into engagement with the shoulder 25 "lhe projection of the. shoulder 30 by the spring 31 is limited by a sto 32 (Fig. 3) forming a part of the inner ent; of the kerf 27. The forward portion of the block 24, and the corresponding portion of the forepart 16, are provided with complemental locking members adapted to prevent for ward endwise movement of the block and vertical and lateral movements of the forward portion thereof. Said members, as here shown, comprise an inclined" socket 33 formed in the under side of the block, and an inclined dowel pin 3st, attached to the torepart to and projecting from the blockseat 1]".
\t'hen the 'heel and foreparts are in the relat ive positions shown by .tnll lines in Fig. t. the rear end of the heel-part at the maximum distant-e from the forward end of the tore1lart. the bottom edge of the hingeplate :1) bearing on the bottom of the kert ti whit-h arts as a stop to limit the relative swinging movements of the parts when the last is tullv extended. The bloelt it may now e applied. its lot-king member :33 being plaeed upon the lot-king member 231. and the rear end portion ot the bloel; being swung do\\'n\vartll until the end t'aee 26 to nes to a baring on the abutment t1, the locking shoulder li at the same time swinging into engagement with the locking shoulder 23. This operation eauses the projections 28 and 28" ot' the locking-plate to enter the kert's 1."; and It) r'espeetively. and thus prevent lateral movement of the rear end portion of the bloelt. the engagement ot the shoulder lit) with the shoulder 21 at the same time preventing a vertieal movement of the rear end portion of the bloelt.
It will now be seen that the blot-it eoutinedfl as deseribed. and bearing elosel against the abutment it. arts as a trut to prevent relative swinging movements of the torepart and heel-part. the extended bearing ot the end tare 2t) ot' the blurb against the abutment tt ot the heel-part and the, preventiou'ot the forward movement of the bloek bv the lot-hing member or dowel 34- rendering the last rigid and eapable ot withstanding the strains and pressures exerted on the last b a leveling maehine and other instrumentalities employed in the nntnu'taeture ot' a shoe on the last. the hinge pin 22 whieh eouueets the heel and t'oreparts beingpraetiealtv relieved t'rom all strain. The loelting-plate 2H pivoted to the instep bloelt and having proieetions entering the lterl s in the heel and t'orepart'st and the loeking shoulder engaging the lot'lting shoulder in the heel-part. eonstitutea simple and etl'eetive means for loele ing the rear end portion of the bloelt against vertieal and lateral displarement. Said l()tl(lllI-])ltltt is displat'eable to rel use the. blot-k. a portion ot the plate projeettug into a transverse oritiee .lt'i in the bloelt. so that a tapering pin 3T (Fig. l) inserted in said oritire i adapted to displate the loeltingplate it the direetion required to withdraw the shoulder :iil l'ront engagement with the shoulder 2 v I \Ylten the last is ready for use the a utment 1 l on the heelpart, and the end t aetit; on the instep blot-k. are vertit'allv arranged. or sltbstttlltiull) at right angles with the longitnditml axis ot the lush so that pressure tending to t'ollapse the last dtttnot tend to last. said parts being providedrespectively with a vertieal bloelt abutmentand a bloelt seat, adetaehable instep lllOtlC having a bottom tat-e adapted to bear on said seat. and a rear end tare adapted to bear on said abutment when the last is extended, and means tor o taehabl loelting the bloek to the heel- .part and tore-part, the bloek eonstituting a strut \vhieh prevents relative eontraet'ing movements ot' the heel and tore-parts.
2. i\ last eomprising a l'teel-part', a torepart hinged to the heel-part to permit longitudinal. eontraetion and extension of the last. said parts being provided respectively with a vertit'al lJlUtk abutment and a bloek seat. a detat-hable instep bloek having a bottom 't'aee adapted to bear on said seat and a rear end laee adapted to bear on said abutment when the last 1;; extended, complemental loelting members at the forward p01- tions of th htoelt seat and bloelt to prevent tot-ward endwise movements of the block, and vertiea and lateral movements of its tot-ward port ion. and 'complemental'loeking members at the rear end portion of the bloelt and the eorresponding portion. of the last to pre ent vertieal and lateral movements of the rear portion of the bloelt and maintain it in position to art as a strut whieh prevents relative eoutraeting movements of the heel and tore-parts one of the lastmeut'ioned lot-king members being tlisplaeeable to release the bloelt'.
