UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
EDWARD L. SCHNEIDER, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO CROUSEHiNDS COMPANY, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
WATERPROOF INCANDESCENT-ELECTRIC-LAMP SOCKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 25, 1913.
Application filed June 19, 1911. Serial No. 633,917.
the State of New York, have invented a certain new andnseful \Vaterproof Incandescent-Electric-Lamp Socket, of which the following is a specification. This inventlon has for its ob ect the productlon of a water proof lncandescent electric lamp socket which is particularly simple in construction, and highly efficient and durable in use; and it consists in the comlnnations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention reference is had to the accompanying drawing in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views. Figure 1 1s a vertical sectional new of this socket. Figs. 2 and 3 are opposite end views thereof.
1 is the body of the socket, the body being formed of insulation and having a recess 2 at one end, and substantially parallel wire passages 3, 4 extending lengthwise thereof and opening into the inner end of the recess and preferably through the innerend wall thereof, the passages 3, 4 also opening through the end face of the body, and the outer ends thereof are enlarged as at 5, 6 for a purpose hereinafter set forth.
7 is a screw threaded sleeve terminal located in the recess 2 and having an inturned flange 8 at its inner end abutting against the inner end wall of the recess-2, the flange extendin across the inner end of the passage 3 and iaving an opening 9 communicating with the wire passage 4.
10 is the central terminal of the socket, the terminal 10 having an angular portion extending through the opening 9 and into the wire passage 4.
11 is a block of insulation located in the sleeve terminal 7 and abutting against the flange 8 thereof, and having an opening 12 alined with the opening 9 of the flange 8- and the wire passage 4, the opening 12 crmitting the angular portion of the terminal 10 to pass through such block 11 of insulation.
The terminals are held to the body by a single clamping member consisting 'o a screw 13 preferably extending axially of the body of the socket and located in an axial passage 14, said screw 13 extending through the inner end of the central terminal 10, a central passage 15 in the block of insulation 11, through the axial passage 14 in the body 1 and into a nut 16 located in the outer enlarged end 17 of the passage 14.
The wires 18 and 19 extend into the passages 3, 4 respectively and are connected to the flange 8 of the sleeve terminal 7 and to the central terminal 10 in any suitable manner, as by soldering, and after the wires have been placed in position, the passages 3, 4
and also the passage 14 are sealed against moisture by wax or cement poured into the enlarged ends 5, 6 and 17 of the wire passages and the passage 14.
This socket is particularly advantageous in that it is composed of minimum number of parts and has but one fastening member for securing all of the parts in assembled position.
WVhat I claim is:
An incandescent electric lamp socket comprising a body formed with a recess at one end, and with substantially parallel wire passages opening into the inner end of the recess, a sleeve terminal having an interned flange seated against the inner end wall of the recess, the sleeve terminal having an.
opening for communicating with one of the wire passages, a central terminal having an angular portion extending through said opening and into the wire passage with which said opening communicates, the body also having a lengthwise passage located between the wire passages, a block of insulation interposed between the flange and the inner end of the central terminal, a single fastening member extendin through the central terminal, the block of insulation and the passa e between the wire passages, and
wires in t e passages respectively, the wires being connected respectively directiy tGET ane :fontne purpose des'cribe&.
