SHEET-METAL BOX.

To all whom it may concern Be itfknown that I, FREDERICK WESTER- BEoK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in the city of St. Louis and State ..of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheet- Metal Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification.

y invention relates to sheet metal boxes of the kind generally used as containers for shoe blacking and the like,and which are provided with slip covers. It is-highly desirable in making boxes of this description to provide for the production of a close joint between the covers and the bodies of the boxes to exclude air from access to the contents to cause evaporation or deterioration of such contents. The bodies of the boxes and the flanges of the covers are, therefore, so produced relative to each other as to provide for the cover flanges fitting snugly and closely to the .box bodies, which results in making it extremely difficult at times to remove the covers, the difficulty being particularly increased in degree when the contents of the box are of an adhesive nature and enter into the joints between the covers and causing them to adhere to each other. Furthermore,, such boxes are commonly, provided. with beads projecting outwardly from the walls of the box bodies to serve as stops for the rim flanges of the covers and it is therefore difficult to insert sharp instruments, such as knives, between the cover flanges and box bodies, as is the customary practice, to loosen the joint between them and permit the separathe bodies.

It is the object of my present invention to provide boxes of the type to which I have referred with knife guiding means that will permit of the ready insertion of knife blades, or other sharp instruments, between the cover flanges and the box bodies, such means being intended to provide only for the initial insertion of the sharp instrument without materially affecting the air tight joint between these members, it being obvious that after such initial insertion, the sharp instrument may be readily moved in a circuit around the box between the cover Specification of Letters Patent. To permit of the readv separation of the cover from thebox body, the flange 4 of said cover is provided with a short'and stiff downwardly extending broad lip 5 that is only sufliciently offset from the flange of the cover to permit the lapping thereof over the bead 9 of the box body when the cover is put in place on said body and which, due to the presence of the head, has its lower edge held slightly separated from the box body wall. as seen in Fig. II. It will. be understood that a knife blade, or other sharp instrument, may be readily inserted back of the lip 5 due to its separation from the box body wall, and then continued upwardly between this lip and the bead 2 to pass between the cover flange and the body wall above the bead, subsequent to which insertion of the instrument, it may be quickly carried around the box in the joint between the cover" and box body to loosen such joint and provide for the easy removal of the cover.

I claim:

A box comprising a body having an annular wall rovided with an outwardly jutting annu ar bead located beneath the top edge of said body and a cover'having :1 depending flange, fitting closely to the body and to the bead, formed with a, short stiff knife guiding broad lip lapping the annular bead and having its edge projecting slightly beyond the bead.
