ELECTRIC RECEETACLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
.Patented Feb. 25, 31913.
Application tiled January 9, 1908. Serial No. 409,956.
To HU vwhom 'it may concern.
Be it known that i, ivrimxiut, l). liano. a Citizen ot' the llnited States, residing at Larelnnont Farm. `West Camp. in the county ot lilster and lState ot New York. have invented new and useful Improvements in lillectric-Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to receptacles: tor incandescent electric lamps, and consists in a device. ot' new construction, b v which the wiresl are well prot eeted and maintained at a considerable distance trom each other and from the support on which the receptacle iS secured, such as a ceiling. wall. beam. ete., so as to avoid leakage. short circuit. and consequently accidental tires. For some locations the underwriters have adopted rules that the yline-wires must be separated at least 2.5 inches trom each other and not less than one inch trom the supporting' wall. ceiling` or other support. To meet these and similar retpiirements the present receptacle is: well adapted.
rl`he important elementa ot' the receptacle are a baise. of porcelain, or o't other suitable insulating material, having' a standard, or central portion, large enough to receive and tirmly to Support the lamp terminals, and oppoaite, integral arms provided with cross. grooves near their ends tor the line wirefs; the wire terminals may extend out troni the lamp terminals in `rroovee in the lower sui-tace ot the base. and extend into or acroasi the wire grooves.
cap ot aimilar outline and material to the base is' provided and secured thereto by screws, whereby the lower sm't'ace ot' the base is entirely covered. and all the .metallic parte, includingY the stripped portion ot the wire, are well protected. lt is desirable to torni the cap and the base with subatantially [iat surfaces to tit tight'.
A\ device embodyinfjY the features ot my invention in desirable. form is Shown in the drawing' herewith, in which the reference letters and numerals ot the speciti lation indicate the l@aine parts; in all the figures:
Figure l is an elevation. Figa. 2 and ii are respectively a bottom plan ot the base and top plan ot the. top, showingT their taces which engage. Figs; 4i and 5 are vertical sections respectivelyv7 on section lines lV and n V of Fig. Q.
In the figures, A indicates the base hav- `tace to set against the ing' one or more projections on its upper wall, ceiling', etc. AS here Shown the projection is made in the form ot two legst, 1. autiieiently large and autticiently spaced solidly to support the receptacle, but the Surface oif the leg or legs is made as small as possible. consistent with attordin` tirm support, to minimij/.e the accumulation and retaining` of moisture between the leg snrtaees and the wail. The lower face o t the base is preferably provided with Qrossgrooves for the line wires 3. near the Ht: from these erosssgroovea extend the terminal `Q jrooves 5 to a slight circular depres- Sion (i, ot slight depth it'or the Screw threaded, or outer. lamp terminal T. ln the terminal grooves are arranged. diagonally opposite, the terminal pieces S and 9, whose outer ends extend into the cross grooves and are there provided withbindingscrews10,01' other .suitable means tor the attachment otl the line wires. 'lhe inner ends ot the terminal pieces extend into the central depression to form the lamp terminals or parts thereof. As here shown, the inner end ll of piece S 'rests on the porcelain knob or boss, 1Q to torni the central lamp terminal, and the inner end of piece it curved around one side ot said knob to carry the outer lamp terminal T,eommonllY a copperthreaded shell. These pieces and terminalsl are secured to the base by suitable screws 15. en- `aging with nuts where deired and arranged in countersunk holes, which may be tilled with insulating' eemnt.
lt `1 ti are deeply. eeuntersunk holeS in the lame ior the securing screws 1T 17, which are preferably arranged diagonallyv opposite, like the terminal pieces, to give wide separation between all the metallic parts and avoid leakage. The base formed substantially as here shown is adapted to be set and secured tirmly on the Vall, beam, ceilA ingor in any position in which it may be used.
The baae may have Straight sides, or outwardly curved aty the middle as Shown, to give space for the outer terminal. The arms may taper or curve upwardly to the legs as shown to combine strength and lightness.
'the cap il. oi similar material and ontline to the base. is provided to be secured thereto by one or more cap screws 20 or byA other suitable means, after the line Wires 3 ends ot the integral arms 4 A frein to provide n. subs here been nrinngged and Connected, Goinscrews inny 4be lengtliened to extend ilirougn tlie bese and. perform the function nt' f'uring the reeepteolein positien and so displace tlie Securing :screws i7. The Gzip lius nn iiitegriil round bushing @for said. lf terminal, and on its upper snrleoe, if desir d iep ,grooves 25 28 corresponding; to 9 and depressions 24, 24,
flores o n pending to terminal grooves 5, to lit over the wire terminals and binding' screws. The grooves may be mede wholly in either bese, or een, but preferably es shown, partly in enel). iCfninnonly the insulation of the wires will substantially lill the ends oi t-lie Cross grooves excluding dust, ete. 'ilie upper surizice et the @up is formed to engage snugly with the continuelle lower sin-'lace of tlie linee, but may be :slightly oils-et nt its Central portion, to compensate for slight variations in the poreelein. lily .inenns o'F tlie bushing tlie carp 'is reinforced to avoid breaking; the ninin portion nifty therefore be nitide thinner than would be necessary without tile bushing.
By this construction lieve produced a. receptacle to Carry the wires at the desired glistanoe ifroin enen other and from the snpport-j end fully to protect the metallic parts 'troni sliort Circuit, leakage and accidentel Contact. it is strong, simple and nent in appearance.
lilliile the forni here shown desirable, do notI Wish to limit, myself thereto, for it may ,be varied' Without departing from my invention.
Haring tlins deseeribed my invention, what l elniin is,
l. lin ti receptacle, the combination with e lense provided. with n central recessed por tien intl arms outwardly extending therentialljy rectangular lower surfe ce :undprovided with projections on its upper snrltaee litri/ing e, small engaging :usen to set against the support whereby et n. distance therefrom, the sides of the base bein curved to gradually diminish the thickness of the arms toward their ends, of lamp terminels secured to the lower surface of tlie base Within the recessed portion, Wire terminals extending outwardly along the lower surface of the respective lmnp terminals, binding screws in tlie wire terminals for the Wires, a cap of similar outline to the lower surface nl' the buse and ineens to secure the cap thereon, said cap and bese having their adjacent surfaces recessed to reeene the wire terminals, Wires :incl bindingu screws. Y
Er receptacle 'tor inenin'lescentelectric lamps Comprising en insulating bese-substantially rw'flnngulnr in outline and having supporting legs upwardly extending from its upper euri-nre, said legs being spaced apart und :uinnged adjacent to but Within the ends et tlie baise, :i tubular lmnp terminal and n Central lmnp terminal oentrallyn-rrengeil nnd'seenred on the lower surface of the base, terminal pieces secured on seid lower surlifwe and extending from the respective lmnp terminals toward the respective ends of the base, binding screws .in the endsoit the terminal pieces, a. 'thin @over of insulating material, substantially the seine inoutline as the bese., to lit tile lower surface of the bese and to protect theine'tellic parte on' said sur-fece, seid cover being set directly in Contact with the lower surface of the lease lmi'inoJ e. round hole for the tubular terminal and en integral tubular bushing around tlie hele to lit. snugly around the tuonlertei-- ininal and screws to secure the @over to t-lie bese.
