DUST-PROOF KNUCKLE-JOINT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 25, 1913.
Application filed May'G', 1812. Serial No. 695,510.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, RANDOLPHE M. Mc- GAHEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tampa, in the county of Hills- 5 boro and State of Florida, have invented a new and useful Dust-Proof Knuckle-Joint, of which the following is a specification.
One object of the present invention is to provide a device of the class above mentioned, having novel dust-excluding caps which prevent the entrance of d'ust'at the ends of'the knuckle.
A further objectof the invention is to provide a device of this type having dust excluding caps interlocked against rotation with the knuckle and constituting bearings for the ends of the knuckle.
A further object of the invention is to provide a structure of the character above mentioned, in which the dust-excluding caps serve, at once, to retain the bushings within the knuckle and to form bearings for the knuckle.
With'the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the descript ion proceeds, the invention resides, in the corn Ybination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter de-' scribed and" claimed, it beingunderstood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of'what'is claimed without departing from the spirit ofthe invention.
Inthe accompanyingdrawings, Figure 1 shows the invention in side elevation; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section; Fig-.23 is aperspective of the upper dust-excluding cap; and Fig. 4 is a perspective of the lower dust-excluding cap.
In the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 designates an axle, having, as usual, arms 2, terminated in alined bearings 3 and 4. There is a transverse shoulder ,5 upon the lower face of theuppr bearing 3, a similar shoulder 6 being fashioned upon the upper face of the lower bearing 4.
' The numeral 7 indicates the movable axle end, the same being provided with a't-ubular knuckle 8, the bore of which is designated by the numeral 9. The extremities of the bore 9 of the knuckle are enlarged in diameter as-indicated at 10 to receive bushings 11.
cap, denoted generally by the numeral12, is interposed between is equipped with a reduced neck as indicated the upper end ofthe knuckle 8 and the upper arm 2. In its upper face, the cap 12 is fashioned with a transverse shoulder 14, the shoulders 14 and 5 constituting inter engaging elements preventing the cap 12 from rotating upon the bearing 3. At its periphery, the cap 12 is pro-Videdwith adepending flange 15 surroitndingathe upper end of the knuckle S, the construction being such that the upper end of the knuckle is journaled for rotation within the cap 12.
The invention further includes a' lower cap 16 which is interposed between the lower end of'the knuckle Sand the lower arm 2. The cap-16 constitutes a thrust bearing for the knuckle 8, and is provided with a shoulder 17 in its lower face, the shoulders 17 and 6 constituting interengaging 'elements serving to prevent the cap 16 from rotating upon the bearing 4. The cap 16 18 received rotatablywithin an enlarged portion 19 of the bore 9 of the knuckle 8.
The numeral 20 designates generally, a spindle which isextended through the bearings 3] and 4, thespindle 20 being reduced and threaded at its lower end, asindicat'ed at 21, the end 21 being threaded into the bearing 4. A nut 22 is applied to the threaded' end 21 of the spindle, the nut bearing against the lower faceof thebearing 4, Adjacent its upper end, the spindle 20 is provided With a shoulder the upper face of A the bearing 3, theshoulder 23 being provided with wrenchfaces,
thespindle 20 may berotated' to cause the threaded end 21 thereof to engage with the bearin g 4, Y
Fashioned in the upper end of the spindle 20 is an oil chamber 24 communicating with an axial duct 25, extended laterally throu h the spindle and opening into a super cial, longitudinal groove 26. Threaded into the chamber 24 is an oil cup 27 having superficial wrench faces 28. In the interior of the oil cup 27 is a circumscrihing groove 29, the ends of which define shoulders between which is slidably mounted a valve disk 30, thrust downwardly by means of a compression spring 31, bearing against the upper end'of the groove 29, to
thrust the valve disk 30 against the lower end of the groove. -Located within the spring 31 is a link 32, connected'with the yalve 30, and pivotally connected with 23 engaging most clearly in Fig. 1, whereby lower end of the knuckle, will be avoided.
Since the caps 12and 16'are provided, respectively, with the shoulders 14 and 17, en-
gaging respectively With the shoulders 5 and 6, the caps will be held against rota tion, the caps constituting bearings upon which the ends of the knuckle 8 are journaled. The caps 12 and 16 engagethe ends of the bushings l0, and constitute means for retaining the bushings within the knuckle.
As will be understood readily, the valve disk 80 may be manipulated, the oil in the oil chamber 24 flowing downwardlythrough the duct 25 and thence into the groove 26, an efficient and thorough lubrication of the 4 knuckle 8, as the same rotates upon the spindle 720, being thereby effected.
The device is so constructed hat a knuckle which has been worn at its ends, and the bore of which has been unduly enlarged, through wearing, may be renewed and made serviceable. As will be understood lreadily, the caps 12 and 16 not only constitute dustexcluding members, but, atthe same time, they constitute, means in which the knuckle is .journaled. Further, the caps 12 and 16' serve to take up any space existing between the ends of the knuckle 8 and the bearings 3 and 4, a longitudinal reciprocation of the knuckle 8 upon the spindle 20being thereby avoided. I
Having thus ddscribed the invention, what is claimed is 1. In a device of the class described, a
member having arms; a part having a knuckle received between the arms; upper and lower dust-excluding caps interposed between the ends of the knuckle and the arms, the upper cap having a flange engaging the outer face of the knuckle; interengaging elements upon the caps and the arms preventing a rotation of the caps; and a spindle engaged with the arms, with the caps and with the knuckle.
2. In a device of the class described, a member having arms; a part having aknuckle received between the arms; upper and lower dust-excludingcaps interposed between the ends of-the knuckle and the arms, the upper cap having a flange engaging the outer face of the knuckle and the lower cap having a-reduced neck extended into the knuckle; interengaging elements upon the caps and upon the arms cooperating to prevent a rotation of the caps; and a spindle engaged with the arms, with the caps and with the knuckle.
3. In a device of the class described, a member having arms; a part having a knuckle received between the arms; upper and lower dust-excluding caps interposed between the ends of the knuckle and the arms, the upper caphaving a flange engaging the outer face of the knuckle and the lower cap having a reduced neck entering the knuckle; interengaging elements upon the caps and upon the arms preventing rotation of the caps; bushings within the knuckle and abut-ting against the caps; and a spindle engaged with the arms, with the caps, with the bushings and with the knuckle.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
RANDOLPHE MENALGUS MGGAHEE.
