'WILLIAM RUSH OSBORNE, OF
PALESTINE, AND GEORGE FRANKLIN LEBUS, F
ELECTRA, TEXAS.
FELL-DRILL WRENCH.
Application filed August 27, 1912. Serial No.
zens oi the l] uitcd States, and residents, re-
spectively, of Palestine. in the county of.
Anderson and State of Texas, and Electra, in the county oi lVichita, in said State, have invented an Improvementin ell-Drill Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention is an improvement in the class of large pipe wrenches which are. particularly designed and adapted for use on drill pipe used in drilling wells, the pipes being made in sections which are connected in vertical alinement by means of screw couplings. Greatforce is often required to unscrew the sections, for the purpose of renewing the. boring hit, as may be required several times in the course of a days work.
The details of construction, arrangement, and operation of the wrench is as hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawinof, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the main portion of the wrench applied to a drill pipe shown in cross section. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same parts shown in Fig. 1. Fig. a perspective View of the wrench with the jai as open.
The chief components oi. the wrench are two curved jaws 1, 2-, a hahdle and lever- 3. pa rallcl links st, and a hasp or clutch member 5 which serves to loclr together the free ends of the jaws. The main jaw 1 is piv oted at 6 directly to the end of the handle and lever 3. and provided with a detachable segmental gripping block 7, which is provided on its inner surface with ratchet lceth. or transverse ribs, inclined in a direclion away from the pivot. The inner end of this gripping block abuts a shoulder 1* formed at the heel, or inner end, of the and such shoulder serves to resist the jaw. pressure on the gripping block which 1s mculcnt to operation ot the tongs. Lag
8 pass through the jaw l and secure i lr in place. s own in Fig". 3, the-inner or toothed sidev ot the block is provided with grooves into which the ends of the screws project. The opposite or smaller jaw 2 is pivolcd at. 9 between two tlal. parallel links 4, which are formed at an obtuse angle and pivoted to the lever 3 at 1.0, that is to say, at a point Specification of Letters Patent.
' in rear of the pivot- 6 of the main jaw.
' lllO A toothed gripping block 7 is applied to the jaw 2 and its outer end abuts :1 lug or shoulder 2, while a lag screw 11 secures it at the middle. Thus the lug 2 resists endwise pressure of the gripping block which occurs in use of the tongs. The clutch member 5 is a curved and tapered'bar and pivoted at 1), to the free end of the main jaw 1, while its free terminal is provided, as shown in ig. 3, with a slot 5 adapted to receive a lug 2* formed integrally with the smaller jaw 2 and located adjacent to the end of v the latter.
As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the thickness of the pivoted end of the jaw 1 and the adjacent portion of the lever 3 is such that they are adapted to pass between the links 1 when the wrench is being operated, and thus we produce what may. in view of its operation, be termed a toggle pipe wrench, since the gripping action of the.- jaws on the drill pipe increases ccrrespo'ndin; to the pressure applied to the lever in the direction indicated by arrow. There is therefore no danger of the jaws slipping on the pipe :1: in the operation of the wrench.
In unscrewing the drill pipc the wrench, which is often termed breaking-out tongs, is placed on the pipe above the coupling, it being necessary tor this purpose to open the jaws, as shown iu'Fig. and then to engage them by means of the clutch, as shown in Figs. land 2. Another wrench is placed on the coupling and engaged with a fixed object on the turn-table; then the clutch member being thrown inand pressure applied to the lever B. the pipe is rotated and thus unscrewed.
it is unnecessary to give other details of the cpcralion of the wrench save to state that, for the purpose of hoisting and lowering and otherwise conveniently operating the wrench, an eye-bolt 123 is screwed into lcvcr 3 at a point. adjacent to the pivot. 01' the links l, and a rope is connected with this and passed over a pulley or beamoverhead.
lv'llllt/ we claim is 1 l. The improved wrench sj'iccilied, comprising; a lever, two curved jaws, one pivoted of the lever and the other which are in turn pivoted to the lever in rear of the jaw pivot, toothed segmental tor the purpose oppositely Patented Feb. 18,1913.
directly to the end to parallel links distance between the links, so that they are adapted to swing between the latter, and a 15 tout'hed clutch member adapted to engage aml lock together the free ends of the jaws,
as ileserihml.
