CONVERTIBLE BURNER AND RANGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 18, 1913.
Application filed June 3, 1912. Serial No. 701,126.
To' all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN ERBEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Convertible Burners and Ranges, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a convertible burner and range, and the invention consists in the construction and combination of parts substantially as shown and described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the range in section, and Fig. 2 is a cross section front to rear. Fig. 3 is a cross section of the burner and Fig. 4c is a cross section of a modification. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the burner.
As thus shown the invention consists first in a convertible burner and secondly, in a convertible range, whereby either solid fuel alone may be used or gas, and the burner itself is convertible for either natural or artificial gas.
To use the burner a suitable hole or opening is made in the rear wall 2 of the oven which is also the rear wall of the range and of a single thickness in this instance.
The burner B, as a whole, comprises a base 3 which is attached to the wall 2 by means of bolts or screws 4 and brackets b and a swell or hollow chamber 5 lengthwise adapted to receive the gas from pipe 6 and emit the same through a series of perforations 7. In Fig. 3 the said perforations are in the base 3 adapted to discharge into the oven of the range, while in Fig. 4 the said perforations 7 are in theswell or chamber 5. In this latter construction the burner is shown as attached on the inside of plate 2 and is within the oven, presumably. it may be either within or without and on rear or side.
Pipe connection is made at both ends because the burner is invertible or reversible as to its ends according as natural or artificial gas is used. WVhen natural gas is used the perforations 7 come at the top, as in Figs. 1 and 2, but if artificial gas is used with the usually higher pressure the burner is inverted to bring the said perforations 7 down below and the series of air inlet or supply openings 8 for supporting combustion will then be the reverse of Figs. 1 and 2 or below the perforations 7. The said air supply holes are governed by a slide damper 10 having holes to register with the holes 8 and adapted to admit more or less air or close the holes 8 entirely. The said slide or damper 10 is slidably confined upon one side and edge of the burner base by screws 12 or the like in or through slots 13 in said damper.
If the range is to be used with solid fuel the burner B may be removed and a plate be fastened over the opening in the wall 2 in lieu of said burner or the burner can be closed with the said slide damper.
It should be observed as important that the perforations 7 are not in the center of chamber 5 but off said center as shown and that they come above the center for natural gas so as to work with the low pressures common in the country where gas wells frequcntly have very low pressure.
Burner B is slidably inserted within brackets I) from one end thereof, which is open, and the oven 0 is provided with a series of ventilating openings 0 at its top and a damper (Z therefor. A damper D controls the exhaust flue.
I claim:
1. A range having an opening in the side thereof and a burner reversible endwise over said opening adapted to burn natural and artificial gas at will, the said burner having a series of perforations lengthwise off its middle for the escape of the gas and a series of air inlet openings along one edge parallel to said perforations.
2. A range having an opening in the side wall thereof, a burner having side flanges overlapping the edges of said opening and means to temporarily secure said burner in place, the said burner having air inlet openings through one of said flanges and provided with a hollow body having a series of perforations off the center thereof and on the side next to said air inlet openings.
In testimony. whereof I atlix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN ERBEN.
