To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Anoilm L. Ross, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Holder for Brooms and Like Articles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provlde a new and improved holder for brooms and like articles and arranged for quick and secure attachment to a wall or other support and adapted to permit of conveniently engaging the handle of a broom or a like article with the holder for supporting the broom or disengaging the broom from the holder whenever it is desired to make use of the broom.

For the purpose mentioned use is made of a wire bracket adapted to be fastened to a wall or other support, and a wire bail for the passage of the stick of a broom or other article, the bail being mounted to swing on the said bracket and being provided with a pin adapted to engage the stick at the rear side thereof.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a plan view of the holder in position on the support and engaging a broom handle, the latter and the support being shown in section; Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a modified form of the holder as applied with the bail in the position of rest; and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the same with the bail in horizontal position.

The holder for brooms and like articles, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, consists essentially of a wire bail A for engagement by the stick B of a broom or alike article, the bail being mounted to swing on a wirebracket C adapted to be fastened by a screw D to a wall or other support E. The bracket C is formed from a single piece of wire bent to provide at one end a horizontally-disposed eye C, and the other end terminates in a rearwardly-extending pin C adapted to be driven into the support E to assist the screw D in securely holding the bracket in position on the support E. Intermediate the ends of the bracket C the wire is formed into a vertically-disposed coil C for the passage of the screw 1), as will be readily understood by reference to the drawings. The bail A is also made from a single piece of wire bent into U or bail shape, as plainly shown in Fig. 1, one end of the eye terminating in an eye A engaging the eye 0 so as to form a hinge connection with the same. The other side of the bail A terminates in a coil A through which passes that portion of the bracket C adjacent the pin C to provide another hinge connection for the bail A to permit the latter to swing up and down on the bracket C.

The coil A terminates in a forwardly-extending arm A from which extends a U- shaped cross bar A terminating in a rearwardly-extcnding arm A from the end of which extends a transverse bar A to approximately the middle of the bail A and from this bar A extends forwardly a pin A terminating in a point A adapted to engage the back of the stick B. It is understood that by the arrangement described the pin A is strongly supported and is located a distanceabove the plane of the bail A to permit of conveniently inserting the stick B in the opening of the bail A at the time the latter is swung upward into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and when the bail with the stick therein is released and swung downward then the point A of the pin A finally engages the back of the stick B to securely hold the latter in position in the bail A. In a like manner the stick B can be readily removed from the holder by moving the bail A upward so as to impart a like upward swinging motion to the bail A until the point A disengages the stick, thus allowing the removal of the latter from the bail A.

In the modified form shown in Figs. 3 and 4-. the bail F is mounted to swing up or down on a bracket G secured by a screw H to a support I. The bracket G is made of a single piece of wire and is provided at its ends with eyes G. G engaged by eyes F, F formed on the bail F also made from a single piece of wire. The eye F terminates in a stop lug F adapted to rest against the face of the support I to normally hold the bail F at an angle of about 45 relative to the support and thus allow passing the stick into the bail without first swinging the bail fro-m a vertical position of rest into the angular position. The other eye F of the bail F engages the eye G of the bracket G so that the eyes F, F form with the eyes G, G a hinge'connection to permit the bail F to swing up or down. The eye F termi nates in a fo-rwardlyextending arm F* from which extends a U-shaped cross arm F terminating in a rearwardly-extending arm F from the rear end of which extends a transverse arm F terminating in a for wardly-extending pin F adapted to engage the back of the stick B of the broom or other article. The holder shown in Figs. 3 and 4 is used practically in the same way as the holder illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2.

By reference to the drawings, it will. be seen that the cross arms A and F extend over the pins A and F and thus form guards to prevent the user from injury to the fingers when using the holder. It will also be noticed that by the arrangement described the pins A", F are yieldingly mounted thus insuring a firm contact of the pin points with the stick to securely hold the latter in place.

By constructing the bail A and the bracket C from wire an exceedingly strong and durable holder is provided and one which can be manufactured and sold very cheaply. When the holder is not in use the bail assumes a vertical position and thus forms no undesirable projection on the side of the wall or other support E.

Having thus described my invention, I

claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. A holder for brooms and like articles, comprising a bracket adapted to be attached to a wall, and a bail made from a single piece of wire mounted to swing up and down on the said bracket, a pin above the plane of the bail and extending from the rear in a forward direction approximately midway between the sides of the ball, and a yielding guard integrally connecting one side of the bail with the rear end of the said pin and overlying the same.

2. A holder for brooms and like articles, comprising a bracket adapted to be attached to a wall, and a bail made from a single piece of wire mounted to swing up and down on the said bracket, a pin above the plane of the bail and extending from the rear in a forward direction approximately midway between the sides of the bail, a yielding guard connecting one side of the bail with the rear end of the said pin, the said guard having a U-shaped cross arm above the pin, side arms connected with the cross arm, one of the said side arms being connected with the bail, and a cross bar connecting the other side arm with the fear end of the said pin.
