To all lwhom-1f may concern:
Be it. known that I, HARRY F. SEIDEL, a citizen of the-United States of America, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in-Game Apparatus, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawlng.
This invention relates to a game apparatus, and more particularly to a ten pin used for bowling.
The object of my inventionis to provide a pin with a yieldable Contact surface for a bowling ball, said yieldable contact surface preventing the pin from splitting or becoming injured to that extent that the surface lof the pin interferes with a proper and predetermined ball contact that is so essential especially in a professional game.
It is a well known fact that the ordinary ten pin is often indented, split or otherwise injured by the contact of a ball, such injury impairing the use of the ball. Furthermore, the scarcity of the wood from which ten pins are ordinarily made has raised the price of ten pins and in some communities the demand for high class ten pins cannot be met. lIn view of these facts, I resort to the useof metal for forming the greater part of a ten pin and the ten pin is constructed whereby the ball contact surface thereof can be renewed should the same be injured.`
With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will no w be had to the drawing, wherein there are illustrated the preferred embodiments of my invention, but it is tobe understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such changes as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
In the draw1ng:-Figure 1 isI a front elevation of a pin in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same, and Figs. 3 to 6 inclusive are detailed sectional views illustrating modified forms of yieldable ball' contact surfaces.
A ten pin in accordance with this invention comprises two detachable hollow sections 1 and 2, the section 1 constituting the base of the ten pin and the section 2 constitutlng the neck and head of said pin. The base section 1 has an inwardly projecting -boss 3 provided with a vertical opening 4 that has the walls thereof screw threaded to receive the threaded end of a tie rod 5. '.lhe head 6 of the section 2 is provided with an opening 7 that has the walls thereof screw threaded to receive the opposite end of the tie rod The confronting ends of the sections 1 and 2 are provided with annular flanges 8, said flanges providing annular shoulders 9.
Mounted between the flanges 8 and extending into the sections 1 and 2 is a spacing Y. member 10 l"that forms the body of the pin.
The member 10 has a longitudinal opening 11 providing clearance for the rod 5. The outer walls of the spacing member 10 are flush with the outer sides of the flanges 8, and mounted against the outer walls of the member 10 and resting upon the shoulders 9 of the sections 1 and 2 is a yieldable ball contact band 12 that can be made of fiber, rubber or a yieldable material or composition. The outer side of the band 12 finishes the periphery of the ten pin and also serves as a cushion for prevent-ing the Inetallic sections l and 2 of the pin from being frictillired or injured when the pin is hit by a a In Fig. 8 the spacing member 10 is made of cork, and in Fig. 4 the spacing member 10 and the band 12 are integral and made of rubber. The same construction is shown in Fig. 5 where the combined spacing member and band are made entirely of fiber. The spacing member 10 is eliminated in Fig. 6 of the drawing.
The metallic sections 1 and 2 are preferably made of aluminum and with the tie rod 5 of steel, a strong and durable structure is formed that will withstand the blows to which it is subjected by a bowling ball.
Should a band be injured, the band Canbe easily renewed without discarding the remainder of the pin, and the pin possesses the further advantage of preventing a bowling ball from being injured, thereby maintaining the bowling qualifications of a perfectly formed bowling ball.
What I claim is 1. A ten in comprising a hollow base section, a hol ow top section, an intermediate yieldable section interposed between and connected to the top and base sectionsv and means engaging in the upper portion of the top section and the bottom of the base section torconnecting said sections together and for turt-her clamping the intermediate section between the top and base sections.
2. A ten pin comprising a hollow metallic base section, a hollow metallic top section, a yieldable intermediate section formed of ma terial different from that of the top and bottom sections, and means secured to the upper portion of the top section and the bottom of the base sections for connecting said sections together and for further clamping said intermediate section between the top and bottom sections.
3. A ten pin comprising a hollow metallic base section, a hollow metallic top section, a yieldable intermediate section formed of material different from that of the top and bottom sections, and means secured to the upper portion of the top section and the bottom of the base sections for connecting said sections together and for -urther clampingv said intermediate section between the top andv bottom sections, said top and bottom sections provided with shoulders against which is positioned said intermediate sectiona 4. A ten pin comprising a hollow metallic base section, a hollow metallic top section, a yieldable intermediate section formed of'material different from that of the top and bottom sections, means secured to the upper portion of the top section and the bottom of the base sections tor connecting said sec tions together4 and for further clamping said intermediate section between the top and bottom sections, said top and bottom sections provided with shoulders against which is positioned said intermediate section, anda spacing member interposed between the top and bottom sections abutting against the intom sections,
