Description
tion with the seat.
BENJAMIN J. FORS'IER, 0F IBELVIDERE, ILLINOIS.
SPRING-SEAT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 18, 1913.
Application filed July 6, 1911. Serial No. 637,210.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BENJAMIN J. l ons'ruu, a citizen of the United States, residing at Belvidere, in the county of Boone, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and usetul Improvements in Spring-Seats; and l i do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to spring seats and particularly to that class adapted for use in connection with harrows, plows and similar farming implements.
The object of the invention resides in the provision of a seat which will ellectually absorb the vibration and jolting resulting from the passage of the implement with which it is associated over rough ground.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a seat of the character named which is simple in construction, etlicient in use, durable and which may be manufactured at extremely small cost.
lVith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters of reference denote correspondiiig parts in the several views, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a seat constructed in accordance with the invention, same being shown attached to the beam of a disk harrow. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view showing the construction of the adjustable foot rest employed in connec- Referring to the drawings 10 indicates the beam of a disk harrow upon which is mounted the usual controlling lever 11. At the rear end of the beam 10 is secured a resilient seat supporting arm 12 the lower end of which terminates in the securing foot 13 which is attached directly to the beam 10 by means of bolts 14. The free end of the arm 12 has secured thereto in a suitable manner a seat 15 while a hook 16 is mounted in the arm 12 adjacent the seat 15.
in order to absorb the exaggerated vibra- Lion of the seat 15 which would occur from the jolting of the harrow il said seat were connected solely to the arm 12, there is pro vided an angle iron A which includes arms 17 and 18 the former of which is disposed upon the securing foot 13 and secured thereto by means oi the bolts let, the other arm oi the angle iron A extended substantially in parallel spaced relation to the arm 12 and terminates at its free end in a hook member 19. Disposed between the hooked member 10 and the hook it is a spring 20, one end of which is attached to the hook it while the other end is provided with a chain extension 21 the links of which are adapted for interchangeable connection with the hooked member 12) of the arm 18 whereby the tension of the spring 20 may be varied. By this construction it will be apparent that the abnormal vibration of the arm 12 and the seat 15 under the influence of the jolting of the harrow will be checked by the spring connection 20 and a much more comfortable condition will be produced for the operator.
Suitably mounted upon the arm 18 of the angle iron A is a foot rest B which includes arms 22 and 23. These arms 22 and 23 are divided from each other by means of an enlarged apcrtured central portion 23 through which the arm 18 extends. This enlarged portion has mounted therein a screw 24 which is adapted to be interchangeably inserted in openings 25 in the arm 18, whereby the foot rest B may be adjusted longitudinally of the arm 18 so as to meet the requirements arising as the result of the 1nachine being operated by different persons.
What is claimed is:
The combination with a supporting part, of a resilient arm having one end secured to the supporting part, a seat mounted on the free end of said arm, a hook also carried by the free end of said arm adjacent said seat, an angle iron having one arm secured to the supporting part and its other arm extending substantially in parallel spaced relation. to
the resilient arm and terminating in a hook, In testimony whereof, I aflix my signa indka spring havinhg one end secured to the ture, in presence of two witnesses.
00 carried by t e resilient arm and its 1 other end terminating in a chain extension, 5 BENJAMIN b ORSTER' whereby the hook terminal of the arm of the I Vitnesses: angle iron may be engaged in difierent links HENRY J. Fons'rER, to vary the tension of the spring. i AUGUST W. FRIEBRUNTZ.
