Description

J. FALASGA. NON-RBFILLABLE BOTTLE.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 10, 1912.

INVENTOR Henley WIIJIMM WITNESSES I gw/WM- IJOLUMBIA PLANOUIZAPH co., WASHINGTON. D. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH FALASCA, OF YONKERS, NEW YORK, .ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO LEO MARESCA, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
NON-REFILLABLE BOTTLE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osnrn FALASCA, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Yonkers, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Non-Refillable Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in non-refillable bottles used for trade purposes as an ordinary package to hold in a sealed condition liquid goods" of various kinds, such as alcoholic, malt, and effervescent liquors or proprietary medicines, or the like.
The invention has for its main object to provide a vessel of this class with a neck attachment or seal which is so constructed and arranged that when the vessel has been filled and the neck attachment or seal applied, the vessel may be readily emptied of its contents, but cannot be refilled or re-used.
A further object of the invention is to pro vide an air vent for bottles of this character whereby to facilitate the rapid emptying of the contents of the bottle when desired.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, and illus trate an embodiment of the invention, without however intending by this illustration to confine myself to the precise construction hereinafter described in detail and then claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a central vertical sectional view of a bottle with my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an enlarged horizontal sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1, and, Fig. 5 is a similar view taken on the line 55 of Fig. 1.
The type or shape of bottle herein chosen for illustrative purposes is of course arbitrary, 10 indicating the body of the bottle,
and -11 the neck thereof. This neck is pro vided at its juncture with the body of the bottle, with an interior annular enlargement 12, the upper surface of which is flat faced as at 14 to provide an annular seat for closure member to be hereinafter fully described. At apoint near its upper end, the
bottle neck is provided in its inner wall with a plurality of recesses 15, or as will be Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 10, 1912.
Patented Feb. 18,1913. Serial No. 696,323.
obvious, in lieu of such recesses, an annular groove may be provided, since such groove and recesses will each perform similar functions.
A closure memberis inserted in the bottle neck after the bottle has been filled, such closure member comprising two superposed parts or sections, the lower part ormember embodying an annular base 16 of a diameter somewhat less than the diameter of the bottle neck at the upper end of the enlargement 12, such base being annularly shouldered exteriorly, and having mounted on such annularly shouldered portion a sealing ring or gasket 17, which. may be of cork, or any other suitable material, and which fits neatly with the interior of the bottle neck and rests upon the annular seat 14. Rising centrally from the upper face of the base 16 is a post or upright 18, on the upper end of which is a disk or plate 19 provided with an upwardly-extending annular rim flange 20, the diameter of such plate or disk 19 being less than the interior diameter of the bottle neck for a purpose as will hereinafter more fully appear. The upper member of said closure comprises a circular disk 21 having a central exit opening 22, and which is held in spaced relation to the disk or plate 19 by.
means of a plurality of depending feet 23 carried by said member 21, and arranged radially on the lower face thereof, such supporting feet being so positioned as to fit within the annular upwardly-extending rim flange 20 of the plate or disk 19. Said disk member 21 is provided with peripheral recesses 24, in which are mounted securing pins 25, held in the normally projected position by means of springs 26 mounted in the recesses 24 between the pins 25 and the inner ends of such recesses 24, said pins 25 in their projected positions engaging in the recesses 15, or whereagroove is provided in lieu of these recesses, as heretofore stated, the pins 25 engage in such groove.
The base member 16 is provided with an outlet passage therethrough, the lower portion 27 being preferably flared to provide a large entrance passage for the liquid from the bottle, the upper face of the base member 16 having a hollow extension 28, on which is secured a flexible nipple 29. For the purpose of retaining this nipple securely on to the hollow extension 28, such extension is preferably provided with an exterior "said parts.
bead as 30 at its upper end, over which the circular lower end 31 of the nipple is received, the portion of the nipple above such circular lower end being flattened or collapsed so that the sides 32 thereof normally lie in engagement or close to each other, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawings. The upper end of such nipple is closed, while the sides thereof between the closed upper end and the circular lower open end are provided with slits as 33. It will be obvious from this construct-ion that when the bottle is tilted and the liquid flows into the nipple, the weight of such liquid will expand the nipple, thus opening the sleeves 33 so that free flow of the liquid from the nipple is permitted. The liquid flows from the nipple into the space in which the nipple is located, and outwardly around the member 19, into the space between members 21 and 19, and out through exit opening 22 to the mouth of the bottle.
I preferably provide in connection with the anti-refilling closure above described, a sealing closure for the mouth of'the bottle, the body-portion of which, like the body portion of the anti-refilling closure, being composed of glass, porcelain or othervitreous material. This sealing closure preferably consists of the circular body 34 provided on its lower end with a head 35, and on its upper end with an annular flange 36 so that the diameter of the sealing closure at the outer end is considerably greater than the diameter of the body-portion 34 at its inner end, the outer end of such closure being adapted to be of at least the exterior diameter of the bottle neck at the mouth of the latter. Fixedly secured on the bodyportion bet-ween the bead 35 and the flange 36 is a sealing gasket or ring 37 of cork or similar material, which makes a tight frictional engagement with the inner surface of the bottle neck at the mouth of the latter.
To facilitate the rapid emptying of the bottle, I provide an air tube 38, which is mounted in openings provided therefor in the base 16 and in the disk or plate 19, such air tube being preferably fixedly secured in This air tube extends inwardly to a point near-the bottom of the bottle and carries a valve cage 39 on the inner end of which is a plate 40. This plate on its upper face is provided with an extension 41, the outer end of which is formed into a valve seat 42 of substantially truncated cone in form, such extension being provided with a central port 43 which, at its inner end, preferably diverges into a plurality of ports 44, each extending through the plate 40. A sealing ring or gasket 45 of cork or any like similar material is provided around the extension 41, and the plate 40 is preferably provided with depending feet as 46, so that should the cage 39 rest on the bottom of the bottle, egress will still be provided for the air admitted through tube 38.
In the cage 39 is a valve 47, which is preferably made in hexagonal shape in crosssection as clearly illustrated in Fig. 4, whereby the air passages 48 will be provided between such valve 47 and the circular cage 39. At its inner end, said'valve member 47 is provided with a recess 49 of truncated cone-shape in form which receives the truncated cone-shaped portion 42 of the extension 41. lVhen the bottle is tilted so as to allow the liquid to flow out through port 27, nipple 29 and find its way through exit port 22 as heretofore described, air will also be admitted through tube 38, the valve member 47 unseating as the bottle is tilted, so as to allow the air to pass around such valve member 47 and find its way through ports 43, 44 into the bottle, and thus permit a more uniform flow of liquid through the exit opening.
It will be obvious that introduction of liquid into the bottle, after the anti-refilling closure has been placed in the bottle neck is impossible, the collapsing of the nipple 29 excepting under pressure toward the closed end of the nipple, absolutely preventing any liquid passing through the nipple to port 27. The supporting feet 23 of the member 21 in addition to serving the function of spacing such members apart so as to provide space for the liquid to flow through, also act as guards to prevent the introduction of a wire or other implement through opening 22 and around member 19 to be engaged with the nipple 29. Obviously, the member 19 extending considerably beyond the nipple also acts as a guard for this purpose. 7
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A bottle having a neck provided at its lower end with a seat, an anti-refilling closure comprising separable superposed upper and lower members, the lower member comprising a base, an annular gasket carried thereby and engaging said seat, a post rising centrally of said base, a circular plate on p the upper end of said post of less diameter than the interior of the bottle neck and provided with an upwardly-extending rimflange, said upper member comprising a disk fitting in the bottle neck, depending feet carried thereby fitting within the rimflange of the circular plate of the lower member, and means carried by the disk of said upper member for engagement with the bottle neck to secure the closure against removal from the neck.
2. .A bottle having a neck provided with an interior seat, a closure for said. neck com risingsuperposed separable upper and lower members, thelower member compris .ing a base supported by said seat and having an upwardly-extending centrally-disposed post, a circular plate on the upper end of said post of less diameter than the interior of the bottle neck, the upper member comprising a disk having depending feet resting on the circular plate of the lower member, the base of the lower member having an eccentrically-disposed outlet opening and the disk of the upper member having a concentrically-disposed outlet opening, and means for locking the closure in the bottle neck.
3. A bottle having a neck provided with an interior seat, a closure for said neck comprising superposed separable upper and lower members, the lower member comprising a base supported by said seat and having an upwardly-extending centrally-disposed post, a circular plate on the upper end of said post of less diameter than the interior of the bottle neck, the upper member comprising a disk having depending feet resting on the circular plate of the lower member, the base of the lower member having an eccentrically-disposed outlet opening, a collapsible nipple connected with the out let opening of the lower member, and means for locking the closure in the bottle neck.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
