METALLIC BARREL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 18, 1913.
Application fi ed October 25, 1911. Serial No. 656.716.
71mm ctr/2.0m, it may concern Be it known that 1, Lotus S. FLA'PAU, a citizcnot' the United States. residing in St. Louis and State of Missouri, haveinventcd certain new and useful Improvements in .hletallic Barrels, of which the following a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in metallic barrels and more particularly in sectional barrels.
The object is to provide means for con neetin g' the heads and central or body portion of the barrel together by the use of hoops or bands which form a support for the barrel when being rolled.
The invention further consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts-which will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
Tn the accompanying drawings :Figure proved barrel. Fig. 2 is an enlarged de' tailed sectional view sho-wmg the manner 0t connecting the heads and body to ab-and or hoop, and Fig. 3 is a detailed View in elevation of the same.
A, represents the body or central portion of the barrel which can be made of differ ent lengths for ditlerent sizes of barrel, and 1, 1, represent the heads of the barrels which are provided with upwardly tapering walls 2. Bands or hoops 3 are provided with a. tread l and flanges'fi, Each of the flanges is provided with annular grooves 6, and holes 7 are formed in the flanges at predetermined intervals which extend from the upper surfaces of the flanges 5 below the annular grooves. Recess'es 8 .are formed in the tread 4 on each side thereof, which openings or recesses are in alinei nent with the holes 7 in the flanges. Tnsecuring the Walls of theheads and the body portion of the barrel together, the wall in one of the heads is received in the annular groove 6 of'one of the flanges 5, and an edge of the body portion A is received in the adjacent groove 6 of the other flange 5 of the hoop or band 3. After the edges of the wall and body are inserted into the grooves, a. punch is inwhich protuberance extends into the, base or lower portion of the hole or countersink, This same action is carried out throughout the several holes or countersinks formed in the flanges, thereby forming a secure fastening ot' the wall and body to the hoop or band. It is also to be noted that the extreme edges of the bod and wall extend into the grooves beyond the openings or coin'Itersinks-T, so that a tight fit is produced, 'and after the edges of the body and wall have been 'ceurely fastened tothe band by means of tlHSJllllCll, solder is poured into the openings and around the edges so that an air and liquid-tight joint is lormed. The recesses or openings 8 which are in alinement with the openings 7 form a means for allowing the punch to be inserted into the openings, and also form a passage for the drill in drilling the holes T-in the flanges. Itis to be noted that the heads are raised so that a strong edge is formed when the barrel is headed or placed upon its head, arid when the barrel is to be rolled, the treads 4- of the hoops or hands 3 Term a surface for rolling the ha rrel. and in that way the barrel is not denied or injured in any respect.
' Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:-
1. A metallic barrel the main portion of which is formed of at'least two sheet metal flanges. the latter having annular grooves in the opposite edges thereof to receive the edges of the sheet metal shells, said flanges having holes intersecting the grooves, and portions of the sheet metal shells adapted to be depressed into the holes.
2. In a metallic barrel, the combination with a body and heads, of hoops conuprising treads and flanges, the latter having, annular grooves formed in the edges thereof, said flanges having holes intersecting the annular grooves, the edges of the heads and body received in the annular grooves of the hoops and adapted. to be depressed into the holes formed in the hoops.
$5. in a metallic barrel. the combination with heads and a body, of hoops having grooves formed along-' tlreedges thereof in which the edges of the heads and body are received, said hoops having holeslformed at predetermined intervals throughout" the I circumference thereof in which the edges of in the edges thereof in 'alinement with the countersinks whereby an instrument can be lnserted 1n the counterslnks forde ress ng' the edges of the heads andbody lnto the countersinks for forming a tight 'oint'between the hoops and heads and b0 y.
5. A metallic barrel composed of, at least 20 two metal shells, and a hoop having ,annuilar grooves in the edges thereof for the reception of the edges of the shells, said hoop Zhaving holes-formed therein intersectin the grooves, in which holes the edges 0 the 25 shells are depressed for fastening the shells to the hoop.
In testimony whereof I aifix IIiy signature, in the presence of two witnesses. LOUIS S. FLATAU. Witnesses:
