SCRAPER.
Specification of Letterslatent.
Patented Feb. 18, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. TVIORBIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brownsville, in the county of Haywood and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Scraper, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to scrapers for use in the cultivation of cotton, one of its objects being to provide a simple and durable form of scraper having a supporting plate or shoe connected thereto in a novel manner, said shoe being so proportioned as to present a broad surface to the ground.
Vith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred forms of the invention have been shown.
In said drawings :Figure l is a perspec tive view of one form of scraper, only a portion of the stock being shown. Fig. 2 1s a similar view showing another form of scraper.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 and 2 designate connected metal strips constituting the standard or stock of the scraper, the rear downwardly extending ends of the strips diverging, as shown, and being secured to the inner faces of ears 3 extending upwardly from the sides of a plate 4c. This plate has a flange 5 extending up wardly from its front .face, said flange and the front end of the plate being concaved, as shown at 6, so as to form a rest for the blade 7 of the scraper. This blade is bolted or otherwise secured to the flange 5, as shown at 8, and is also secured, as by means of brackets 9, to the strips 1 and 2. The bottom face of the plate 4: is substantially flush with the active bottom edge of the blade 7 Instead of providing the plate with side ears 3, as shown in Fig. 1, said plate, which has been shown at 10 in Fig. 2, can be formed with a curved upstanding front flange 11 constituting a backer for the scraping blade 12 and a central upstanding rib 13 may be extended from the flange 11. The strips 14 and 15 constituting the stock, do not diverge in this form but merely extend downwardly to opposite sides of the rib 13 and arebolted or otherwise fastened thereto. The blade 12 may be adj ustably connected to the flange by means of bolts 16 extending through slots 17 in the flange.
It will be seen that when the scraper is drawn over the surface of the ground, the blade 7 or 12, will operate to smooth the soil and the plate a or 10 will limit the depth of the cut by the blade and will, by reason of its breadth, serve to steady the scraper and smooth the soil.
As shown particularly in Fig. 2, a brace may be extended from the beam back to the rear end of the rib 13, this brace being indicated at 18.
that is claimed is 1. The combination with a stock including spaced strips, of a horizontal plate secured to the strips and resting on the surface of the soil, and a scraping blade attached to the front end of the plate and extending in front of the strips.
2. A scraper including a stock made up of spaced strips, a horizontal plate secured to the strips and adapted to rest on the surface of the soil, and a scraper blade secured to the front end of the plate, said plate extending practically throughout the width of the blade.
3. A scraper including spaced strips constituting a stock, a horizontal plate secured to the strips and having a concaved front end formed with a flange, said plate being adapted to rest on the surface of the soil, a scraping blade secured to said concaved face of the flange and in front of the stock, said plate extending practically throughout the width of the blade.
4., A scraper including spaced strips constituting a stock, a horizontal plate having a fiat lower face adapted to rest on the surface of the soil, said plate being secured to the strips, there being an upstanding flange at In testimony that I claim the foregoing as the front end of the plate and the front face my own, I have hereto affixed my signature of the flange and plate being concaved, and in the presence of two Witnesses. a scraping blade adjustably secured to the XVILLIAM H. MORRIS.
' 5 flange and extending in front of the stock, said plate extending practically throughout the Width of the blade.
Vitnesses LEE A. HARDISON, GUS BACHERIG.
