To all whom it may concern is it known that I, JOHN ELLIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State 5 of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gas-Controlling lilechanism for Instantaneous Water-Heaters, of which improvement the following is a specification.

A small set screw 14 is also arranged within the rear wall of the chamber, forming an abutment for and serving to regulate the temperature by adjusting the upper end of the lever rest and lever mechanism, which screw is provided with a jam nut 15 to secure it in adjusted position. 7
Assuming that the water in the heater has reached a sufficiently high temperature that the gas valve has been seated bythe spring 5, as shown in Fig. 1, cutting off the gas the heater the operation of opening the valve would be as follows: The thermostat tube in contracting, pushes the rod 7 toward the chamber, causing a like movement of the thrust pin 8 which acts upon the primary lever 10, the upper end of said lever acting upon the secondary lever causes its free end to elevate and raise the gas thus permitting the gas to flow through the chamber, the spring 5 returning the gas valve to its seat when the temperature of the water has again sufficiently increased.
'By providing a chamber within the gas line, and inclosingthegas valve and mechanism therein, no stuffingbox is required for the valve stem, and the parts for operating the valve from the thermostat rod not requiring connection with one another, and
being loosely disposed within the chamber are easily and quickly assembled, cannot become displaced or disarranged and readily adjusted from the exterior when desired.
Having shown and described my inven-' tion, I claim:
-1. In an instantaneous water heater, the combination of a chamber in the gas line,
a thermostat rod projecting from said tube into said chamber, a gas controlling valve in thermostat rod, a primary scribing witnesses.
said chamber, a seating spring engaging said valve, a lever rest loosely seated in said chamber, a primary lever fulcrumed upon said rest and adapted to be operated by the thermostat -rod, and a secondary valve-raising lever fulcrum upon said rest and operated by said primary lever.
2. In an instantaneous water heater, the combination of a chamber in the gas line, a thermostat tube connected thereto, a thermostat rod projecting from said tube into said chamber, a gas controlling valve in said chamber, a seating spring engagin said valve, a thrust pin operated by sai lever operated by said thrust pin, a lever rest loosely seated in said chamber and having said primary lever fulcrumed thereon, a secondary valve raising lever also fulcrumed upon said rest and operated by said primary lever, and screws extending into said chamber engaging said rest for adjusting the temperature and taking up the slack between the levers, the thrust pin and thermostat rod.
3..In an instantaneous Water heater, the combination of a chamber in the gas line, a thermostat tube connected thereto, a ther mostatrod projecting fromsaid tube'into said chamber, a gas-controlling valve in said chamber, a spring for seating the same, a thrust pin operated bysaid thermostat rod, a primary lever operated by said thrust pin, a lever rest loosely seated in'said chamber and having said primary lever fulcrumed thereon, a secondary valve-raising lever also fulcrumed upon said rest and operated, by said primary lever, and screws extending into said chamber engaging said Q rest for adjusting the temperature and taking up the slack thrust pin and thermostat rod.
