LOCKING-criait?.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS SU'rEns,y aA
hold two frame members together, and it is' particularly designed for use 1n museum or.'
display cabinets and cases and similar structures, wherein the marginal frames of panels or walls are juxtaposed, and it is desired to lock them together by a clamp which shall embrace bot-h frames, and which may be readily unlocked if it is desired to separate the frames, aswhere one of the frames and its panel constitutes the. door of the cabinet. In cabinets of this sort, in which the walls are usually made up cach as a unit consisting of a glass panel and a metal marginal frame, and in which several such units are fastened together .to form the cabinet or case, ordinary door locks oirfsliding bolt-rods for that framed panel which is used as the door,
are unsatisfactory for the reason that anyA slight imperfection in the fitting-of the parts, or warping of the structure will p'revent such locks from operating, or from holding the door tightly closed-upon its seat. Furthermore, ordinary locking devices have to be incorporated into the frames, which must therefore be specially prepared for receiving, the locks. With the use of vmy invention two juxtaposed frames may be Ifirmly and tightly locked together ,notwithstanding any slight distortion or lack of lit in the structure, and the device may be applied to the frames withoutV any previous preparation or alteration in the structure of the frames whatscever.
The device may also be used if desired as a clamp for securing together the juxtaposed frames of walls or panelswhich are intended to be permanently fastened, as well as for fastening a movable door fralne to a fixed frame. When so used itpresents marked advantages over spring clips heretofore use-d in structures of this sort, since it is more positive in its action, and also prevents the accidental or intentional separation 'or loosening of the cabinet walls by un,
authorized persons.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate certani embodiments of the invenspeciacatioxrpf Letters ra'tent. Application ined November 11.191,1.

tion,--Figure l is a-,perspective view of my preferred form of locking clamp .in operative position on the corner of a cabinet or case; ig. 2 is a horizontal, sectional view through said clamp and cor er of the cabinet on a plane coincident with the top of the pivoted j aw presently to be described; Figi 3 is avertical section on line 3-3 cf Fig. 2, the pivoted platebeing shown in elevation; Fig. 4 is a top view of a modified form of clamp' containing myv invention; Fig. 5 isa front elevation of said modified form of clamp; Fig. 6 isa/rear elevation of said modified form of clamp; and Fig. 7 is a sec'- tion on line 7 T of Fig. G.
Referring first to the form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, and 3; A, A, represent niet-al marginal frame members, each having a mitered or beveled 'bearing Vsurface adapted to form a tight joint with the corresponding surf-.ice of the other frame when the two frames arel juxtaposed as shown in Figs. l and i2, and each having a channel in which the edge of a panel B is VThese frames and panels constitute no part of my invention. 1
The body of the clamp consists ofla body plate shaped to fit the outer surfaces of the juxtaposed frame members A, A. As here.
eol
one of the frame members A, arid the otherwing a is cut away or recessed inwardly from its` free edge ondines as, attend a5 (Figs. l and 3),-aird the recess is closed by a filler plate a. The filler platea6 is made with an inwardlyI turned jaw a?,- and is pivoted to the body plate within said recess by pins or trunnions as. When in closed position as shown in Fig. 1 and in solidlinesin Fig. 2, the jaw. o7 'engages the edge of the frame member opposite'to that engaged by jaw assaid jaws holding the two frames A, A, together. When jaw a7 isswung open on its pivot as shown in dotted lines 1n Fig. 2, the jaws are disengaged and the frame members released. f
In'order securely to lock thejjaws in closed position s'o as positively to'hold the frame members clamped together. the 'filler plate a is provided 4with a/loelr which may be of ordinary construction, only the bolt of the lock Z1, and thekey hole c, being shown in the drawings. A slotb is formed in the side of the recess in wing a, opposite the bolt to engage the bolt when the latter is thrown outward by the key. Thus the filler i' a and jaw a7 may be positively locked in closed position relatively to the other jaw a2, and in that position the opposed jaws will hold the frame members together, and the outer surfaces of the Vfiller plate will be smooth and flush With the outer surface of the body plate.
Referring now inr Figs. l to 7,
to the modications shown the body plate consists of the Wing d and jaw d2, like the aforesaid Wing a and jaw a, and the wing al which corresponds with the aforesaid wing a, in that it supports the movable jaw. ln this form of the device, the movable jaw di is provided with sliding arms d* and (Z5 fitted to slide in grooves (ZU and (Z7 in wing d. Between said arms is a lock e, which may be of usual construction, secured to the wing d, the bolt of the lock being shown at e and the key hole at e2. The sliding arm als is provided with a. recess (ZS into which the lock bolt e projects to hold the movable jaw d3 in closed position, when the device is clamped upon the frame members in the same position yin which the other clamp is shown in Fig. l. lVhen the bolt c is withdrawn the sliding jaw Z3 may be moved out- Wardly With relation to the opposed jaw d2 to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4, and in Fig. 5. A stop is provided to limit such outward movement, consisting of a pin g secured to the wing d and worliing in the slot it in arm d4.
I claim: l. In combination, a pair of juxtaposed marginal trame members, and a locking clamp extending across the faces of said juxtaposed frame members, having two relatively movable jaws adapted when in closed position to engage respectively the opposite outer edges of said trame members, said jaws also adapted to open by a relative movement of separation to disengage the clamp from the frame members, and a lock adapted to lock one of said jaws to the other independently ot' said `trame members positively to hold said jaws against suoli movement of separation when in closed position.
2. A locking clamp comprising a bod` plate, a iixed jaw at one edge ot said plate, the other edge of said plate having a recess therein, a movable iiller in said recess carrying another jaw, said filler closing the recess when in closed position, and a lock adapted positively to lock said filler and its jaw in closed position.
3. A locking clamp comprising a body plate composed of two angnlarly arranged wings, an inwardly turned fixed jaw at the free edge ot one of said wings, the other of said wings havinga recess extending inwardly from the free edge thereof, a filler plate in said recess pivoter] to said body plate and having an inwardly turned jaw, and a lock adapted positively to lock said filler plate and its jaw in closed position.
Signed by me at llion, N. Y. this sec ond day of November, 1911.
