Description

JAMES C. DAWSON, F WEBSTER GROVES, MISSURI.
-Loosnnnnr BINDER.
Specification of Letters Tatent. Application mea nay 17, 1912. serial No. 697332.
Patented' Feb. 18., 1913.
To all whomz't may concern;
Be it known that I,- JAMEs C. DAWSON,
`a citizen of the United States, and resident of `Webster Groves, county of St. Louis, and
State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loose- Leaf Binders, of which the following is av specification, and which areillustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.a
The invention relates to binders of that type in which the sheets are held on cords or tapes which are permanently attached to one of the cover plates and loosely attached to the other-cover plate.
The object of the invention is-to provide improved means for securing the loose or free end of the tapes; and it consists in a structure as' described and as illust-rated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Fignre 1 is a detailv plan of the binder open; Fig. 2 is a detail of the same in perspective; Fig. 3 is a sectional view onthev line 3 8 `of F 1;l and Fig. .4: is a detail of the sheets-in connection .with which .the binder is adapted to be used.
|l `he binder comprises a pair of side plates 10, 11, usually stiff and made of binders` board or similar material. These plates are preferably united at their inner edges by means o a limp hinge 12, the width of which limits the sheet capacity of the binder.' A pair of tapes 13, 14, are secured to the inner face of one ofthe plates,as 10, and adjacent its inner edge, as represented at 15, 16. This attachment is by means of rivets and each rive-t is provided with an extension, as shown a separate plate or clip 17, 18, which extends to or, if desired, slightlyl beyond the edge of the cover plate and prevents the edges ofthe sheet from being caught between the tape and the cover plate. Metallic loops 19, 20, are secured to the inner face of the opposite cover plate 11 and at or adjacent its inner edge, these plates being preferably secured by means of rivets as shown. rIhe loops are 'of such size that they freely receive the free ends of the tapes 13, 14. A wedge is provided for entering each loop for securing the tape therein after it has been drawn up .to compress the inner1V edges of the cover plates upon the sheets. As shown these wedges take the form of plates 21, 22, leach being' plvotally mounted upon one of the rivet-s,-
as 23, 24, which secure the loops. l Each of these plates is provided with a laterally` projecting wedge tongue 25 so disposed that as the plate is swung upon its pivot it will enter the t-hroat of the loop. Each plate is also provided with a thumb-piece 26 by means of which it may be conveniently controlled. The tongue 25 may be provided with an upstandiner spur S27 on its tapeengaging'face, for increasing the frictional grip of the wedge upon the tape.
The sheets 28 used in a binder of this type are apertured, as shown at 30, for receiving the tape and are slitted,as shown at 29, from the aperture 30 through their inner i edges for convenience in applying them to and removing them from the binder. 1
ln use the wedge plates 21, 22, are thrown back to withdraw the wedge tongues from the loop, leaving the tapes free to slide through the loops to permit thesheets to be inserted or removed.
The sheets being properly placed the tapes are drawn up tightly and the wedge-plates advanced to insert 'their tonguesv within the loops, thereby securely holding the binder in its clamped position.y I -claim as my invention- 1. n a loose leaf. binder, in combination, a pair of coverplates, sheet-holding tapes other plate through which the tapes -respectivelypass, and wedges insertible into the loops for securing thetapes against movement.
2. In a loose leaf binder, in combinaattached to one of the plates, loopson the' tion, a pair of cover platess heet^holding tapes attached to one of the plates, loops on the other plate through which the tapesv respectively pass, and pivoted wedges in sertible into the loops for securing the tapes against movement. p
3. In a loose leaf binder, in combination, a pair of cover plates, sheet-holding tapes attached to one of the plates, loops on the other plate through which the tapes re-j spectively pass, and wedges insertible into ai@ y; 1,053,161
