BARREL-HOOP.
Specifieatien of Letters Patent.
Application filed Aiigusc 18, 1912. Serial No. 715.694.
To all whom i1} may concern:
Be it known that. Enwann'l. BRADDOCK. a citizen of the United Stateg-resnhng in ,lvinchester, county of Middlesex. and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Inr provement in Barreld'loops; otwhich the followingdescription. in connection with the band or strip. provided at one edge with a fold which forms a hollow bead within which is-located a reinforcing wire. whose ends are welded together and also to 'the sheet metal. whereby a very strong. light and inexpensive hoop isfobtained.
Figure l is an elevation of a portion of a barrel pr ovided with a hoop embodying this invention. Fig. 2 a plan of the hoop shown in Fi 1. Fig. 3 at detail'in plan on an enlarged scale of a portion (-1 thehoop-shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 1} 'an eleva"'-)n of the portion section on the line 5-5 Fig. 4.
Referring to the drawing (1. re 'iresonts a metal hoop embodying this invention and comprising; a sheet metal band or strip If providedat one edge with a fold to form a hollow, head (.1 preferably circular in cross section and from which extends a flange or lip 61, which contacts with the body portion of the sheet ineta'ljhoon' The head r (on tains within it a wire a. \v'l'llCll acts to ltlll force said ljiead and is made of sutlicient length so that its ends may be brought into contact with each other and be welded to get-her and also to the bead at the-ends thereof, its-indicated ew the stipphng 1t The'cnds of'th wire may be welded to thereof, and said may be secured to the end of the body portion which it overlaps in any suitable manner but preferably by welding the [lap to the body portion inspots 13.-
From the above description itwill be seen that the sheet metal hoop is materially strengthened by the continuous wire hoop inclosed within the bead and hunted by welding the ends of the wire 6 together, and said sheet metal hoop is still further strei'igtl'lened by welding the wire hoop to it.
Tl'ie'folding edge of the sheet metal hoop and the reinforcing wire 6 may and preferably will be crimped or corrugated to,f0rm pro ections 14. which extend awayvfrom the 'lmrrel 15 and afford surfaces fora hammer or other tool to strike against, when the hoop is being driven onto the barrel. The reintorced sheet metal hoop is especially adapted among other uses to be employed as a chime hoop, as the folded edge reinforced by a wire hoop strengthens the same to such extent as to enable it to withstand a severe blow.
It. will be observed that when the ends of the reinforcing wire a are welded together. there is found within the foldorbead c a welded wire hoop. which is continuous and of itself capable of withstanding a sub stantially great strain. and consequently the reinforced sheet metal hoop is greatly strengthened thereby which enables lighter :k to be employed and the cost ot'the sheet meta hoops to be niateriall reduced.
in the present instance. the endsof the wire are represented as abutting. but it is not desired to limit the invention inthis respect. for if desired. the ends of the wire and of the sheet metal band may overlap and be welded together.
Claims: I

A metal hoop coinp'risii'lg a sheet metal band provided at one edge with a fold to form a hollow bead having its ends welded togctheraml provided below said bead with a body portion having one end reduced in width to form a flap which overlaps the other end of said horlyportion and isflsecured thereto. and a reinforcing wire within the hollow lflffltl having its ends welded together and to the opposite ends of the ra tented Fen-18.19113.
