Application filed October 7,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Sat ntoa fir, 39113.?
To {22] urizmi z. 52 may concern:
Be it known that .l, Homer. M. Tailmmx, a citizen of the United mates, residing at Shelbyville, in the county of Shelby and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Sill-Bracesilor Baling-Presses, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawin s.
The present invention relates to improvements in a sill brace for baling presses, and the primary object of the invention is the provision of a brace adapted to be attached to the'sill of a baling'press and extend back under the baling chamber of the press, and have its rear free end disposed outwardly and parallel with and to engage the inside or" one of the wheels at the baling chamber end of the press, the said brace thus supporting the sill and holding it in line, thus dispensing with stakes generally employed to stake the sill and hold it in place.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a brace so mounted and constructed as to support the sill and brace the same against torsion, said brace being con nected to the baling chamber end of the bah ing press so that ilZSfflQG end, due to the strain thrown upon thesill during the operation of the power link of the press will be properly braced and held without the use of driven stakes. Q
In the drawings:Figurc 1 is a side elevation. of u balinn' press with the sill brace in use. Fig. 2 is a top View illustrating the use of the brace. Fig. is a view showing the sill when not in useand the press telesooped. Fig. i is a cross-section taken on the line of Fig. l.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral it designates the sill of a baliugpress, which in the present instance is a channel plate having the two parallel edges or rims 2, and the supporting cross-piece 3, which is connected to the underside thereof at the balino" chamber end of the press. The ends 4, of said cross piece extend beyond the sides of the Sill and havcatlzu'hed thereto the sill supporting chains 5. whereby the still is supported in tclcscoped or collapsed position when the pro?" is being transported.
Connected slidably to one edge 2 and also to the bottom oi the sill at the bill ng chamber end thereof is the brace 6, which as shown is formed of a single piece of sheet metal L-shaped in cross-seotion, and proyided with the Si'i'aighi portion-'4, uai' the two llll'l engaging lips or flanges B which when the brace is attached to the sill slidably fit over the edge of the sill so that the base .l, of the brace will fit below and against the bottom of the sill, while the side of the brace will lit and he held against the outer face of one of the edges 2 of the sill, the space 11, formed between one terminal of the cross piece 3, also providing a receptacle for the base 9 of the brace. Thus the brace is slidi'ngly supported npon the proper side of the sill, and when in use, with thesill resting upon the ground, the long terminals 12 of the brace will be projected below the baling chamber B, so that short strai 'lit portion 33 thereof will engage the inner side of the righthand rear wheel 14, of the press, and at its engage ment with the ground, thus bracing the sill against the said Wheel, and also against, the torsion thrown thereupon during the operation of the power mechanism of the press.
In order to lock the brace against sliding n'ioveinent when in use, a slot 15 is formed in the rim 2, upon which the brace is .onnt ed to correspond with the slot of the is brace, a pin or lug 1'? carried baling chamber end of the press entering both slots from above and thus locking the brace relatively to the sill.
FY0111 the foregoing description taken in. connection with the drawings, it, is evident by constructing a sill brace as'herein shown and described, that the same will properly brace the sill when in use, that the brace can be readily placed into or out of bracingposition, and that by reason of the sliding connection of the brace with the sill the same may be moved to occupy a small space during transportation. .linrther when said brace is in bracing position it is placed onder the balinn' chamber and out of the Way, yet in the "fery best possible position to brace the sill.-
"What is claimed. is
l. The combination with a baling press, of a. Hill brace projecting rcarwardly and outwardly from the rear end of the sill of the press to engage the ground and the porlion of one of the rear wheels at its junction with the ground.
The combination with a billing press, of a sill brace connected to the sill and extill tending rcmrwardly below the baling chain her of the press, its free end being disposed to rest upon the. ground and engage one of the rear Wheels.
3. The combination with n. bailing press. of a. still brace connected to the sill ant .5 mounted for movement upon the sill and below the baling chamber.
4%. The combination with a beling press having a sill With upstanding edges, of a brace for the sill, L-shaperl in cross-section,
l and slitlably connected to one rim of the sill,
one terminal of said brace being. positioned to extend below the baling chamber when in bracing position.
5. The combination with a billing press,
having a baling chamber mounted upon ground.
6. A. brace for u bailing press sill,- ooniprising a single piece of material having one end to engage the sill and the other end to engage the ground and :1 wheel-of the billing press at the junction of the wheel with the ground.
7. A sill brace for n bziling press, com" prising at single piece of material having a straight portion to sliclnbly engage the sill of a baling press. and an outwardly bent terminal terminating in a straight end to engage the inside of one wheel of the press at the junction of the wheel to the ground.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my sigma.- tnre in the presence of two witnesses.
. HORACE M. 'FiilJlIMi-XN.
