JOHN F. SLAVIK, OF POUGHKEEPSIE, NEW YORK.
TOOL-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 11,1913.
Application filed October 22, 1912. Serial No. 727,135.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN F. SLAVIK, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Poughkeepsie, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tool.- Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a lathe attachment for holding a suitable tool, and has particular reference to a device of this character which will detachably hold a suitable tool and allow of its ready removal without disturbing the lathe tool post.
An important objectof this invention is to provide an attachment of the above men.- tioned character, formed of few and simple parts which may be readily adjusted to properly center the tool.
A further object of my invention is to provide a tool holder attachment, which is strong, durable and cheap to manufacture.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same, Figure 1 is a side view of the attachment as a whole, Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, Fig. 3 is a side view of the securing arm removed, Fig. 4 is an end view of the attachment as a whole, and, Fig. 5 is a side view of one of the headelements.
In the drawings wherein is illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 6 designates a securing arm, which is clamped or otherwise suitably attached to the lathe tool post (not shown). At its free end this securing arm is provided with an opening 7 and an elongated transverse recess or opening 8, as shown. The attachment further comprises a clamping head 9, which is mounted upon the securing arm 6 so that the same may be. swung or vertically adjusted with relation thereto. This clamping head comprises a main or body portion 10, carrying an extension or ea r 11, providing a space or recess 12 for recelvmg the apertured end of the securing arm 6. Placed in engagement with the body portion 10 and upon the opposite side of the securing arm 6 is a plate or head-section 13, which may be attached to the body portion 10 by means of screws 14: or the like. The plate 13 is provided with an extension or ear 15, disposed opposite the ear 11, as shown. The cars 11 and 15 are provided with alined openings 16 and 17, the openngs 17 being screwthreaded while the openmgs 16 have a smooth bore.
The numerals 18 and 19 designate clampmg bolts. The clamping bolt 18 passes through the openings 16, 7 and 17 while the bolt 19 passes through the openings 16, 8, and 17. The bolt 18 serves as a pivot point for the clamping head 9, while the bolt 19 serves as means to rigidly lock the head 9 1n adjustment at different vertical positions with relation to the securing arm 6.
The body portion 10 is provided with a vertical screw-threaded opening 20, receiving a clamping bolt 21, which serves to hold a suitable tool or tool bar 22 in place, such tool being disposed within a suitable opening 23, as shown.
It is obvious that the tool 22 may be readily removed by the proper manipulation of the clamping bolt 21. The clamping head 9 may be easily swung in a vertical plane with relation to the securing arm 6, to properly center the tool 22, subsequent to which the bolt 19 is turned for clamping the head 9 against displacement. My device is strong and simple and is so constructed that the tool may be removed and another one put in place without disturbing the lathe tool post.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that certain changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. An attachment of the character described, comprising a securing arm adapted to be connected with a lathe tool post, a twopart clamping head provided with a recess to receive one end of the securing arm, means pivotally connecting the clamping head with the securing arm so that said clamping head may be swung in a vertical plane with relation thereto, means to lock the clamping head in adjustment at different positions with relation to the securing arm, and means to connect a tool with theclamping head.
2. An attachment of the character described, comprising a securing arm adapted to be connected with a lathe tool post and of the securing arm, a bolt passing throughone end of the clamping head and the inner opening of the securing arm, a clamping bolt passing through the clamping head inwardly of the first named bolt and through the elongated transverse opening of said securing arm, and a clamping bolt for holding a tool in the transverse tool receiving opening.
8. An attachment of the character described, comprisin a securing arm adapted to be connected with a lathe tool post and provided near one end with an inner opening and an outer elongated transverse opening, a clamping head comprising a body portion carrying an ear forming therewith a recess to receive the apertured end of the securing arm, said ear being provided with a plurality of screw-threaded openings, a plate attached to the body portion and provided with openings, bolts passing through the openings in the plate and ear and securing arm, said head being provided with atransverse tool receiving opening, and a clamping screw having screw-threaded engagement with the head and extending into the tool receiving opening.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
