Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb. 11, 1913.
Application filed October 25, 1911. Serial No. 658,607. r
To all whom-it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES NYBERG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Huntington, in the county of Suffolk and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Tool for Compressing Valve- Springs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to tools for compressing valve springs, and it has for its object to provide one with two members, one being disposed in an elongated slot in the other, with means by which the two members may be readily pivoted together in adjusted position. Each of the nembers has a forked terminal disposed at an angle to the body of the member and the members may be readily pivoted together with the terminals converging or diverging, or, if desired, the members may be pivoted together with the terminals extended in the same direction, and substantially parallel.
Additional objects of the invention will appear in the following complete specification, in which the preferred form of the invention is disclosed. E
In the drawings similar characters of reference indicatecorresponding parts in all the views, in which-,
Figure 1 is a'view of the invention adjusted to engage both terminals of a spring for compressing the spring; Fig. 2 is a view of the invention adjusted in another position so that it may be used as a lever with the terminal of one of the members engaging the washer which rests against a spring of the valve; Fig; 3 is an end view of the invention looking in the direction of the forked terminal; Fig. 4 is a view showing a modified form of the invention. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary tplan view showing how the handle of one o the members may be readily disposed through a widened portion of the slot in the other member.
By referring to the drawings it will be seen that the tool is composed of two members 5 and 6, the member 5 having an elongated slot 7 with a lateral recess 8 communicating with one end of the slot. The member 6, which is normally disposed in this elongated slot 7, may be readily removed by disposing it substantially at right anglesto the-member 5, and withdrawing it from the slot at the point where the lateral recess 8 is connected with the slot, This lateral recess 6 is provided to accp'mmodate the handle '9 of the member 6, this handle 9 being wider than thebody of the member 6, and also wider than the width of the slot 7. There are a plurality .of orifices 10 which extend through the body of the member 6, and there are also orifices 11 which extend through the sides of the member 5 at the slot, these ori- 'fices 10 and 11 being provided to accommodate a cotter pin '12, by which means the members 5 and 6 may be readily pivoted together.
It will be observed that as a plurality of orifices are provided in each-of the members they may be adjusted and maybe pivoted together as may be desiredfEach of the members 5 and 6 has a forked terminal 13, these forked terminals 13. being disposed at an angle relatively to the body of the mem bers. As shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the members may be pivoted together with the forked terminals converging so that they may be used to engage the opposite ends of a valve spring 14. However, when desired, the member 6 may be readily withdrawn from the member 5 and may be disposed from the other side of the member 5 through the slot 7, so that the forked terminals 13 will diverge from each other. When the members have been so adjusted they will be disposed as shown in Fig. 2 and one of the members may be used as a fulcrum as the forked terminal of the other member is pressed upwardly to engage the washer 15 mounted on the valve stem 16. By pressing the washer 15 upwardly the springs 17 may be compressed, in order that a key maybe disposed in the valvestem 16. It is also possible-to adjust the members so that the forked terminals 13 will both be disposed in the same direction. When this is done the under surface of one of the forked terminals may be disposed against the support-- ing member to provide a firm base, while the forked terminal on the other member may be used to engage a washer spring or other-member, which is to be raised or to be compressed. When desired the member 6 may be withdrawn from the slot 7 in the member 5-, and the member 6 may be disposed withits forked terminal 13 extended in the same general direction as the forked Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a tool for compressing valve springs, a member having an elon ated slot with an orifice extending into the slot, there being a lateral recess in the member, extending from the slot, a second member having a terminal greater in width than the slot, and less in width than the slot plus the recess, the second member being adapted to be introduced in the slot at the lateral recess, there being a plurality of orifices in the second-mentioned member, and a pin disposed in the orifices in first and second-mentioned members.
2. In a tool for compressing valve springs, a member having an elongated slot with an orifice extending into the slot, there being a lateral recess in the member extending from the slot, a forked terminal on the member disposed at an angle to the body of'the member, a second member having a terminal adapted to be introduced into the slot, at the lateral recess, a terminal of the secondmentioned member being greater in width than the slot and less in width than the slot and the recess, the. other terminal of the second-mentioned member being forked, and being disposed at an angle to the body of the second-mentioned member, there being a plurality of orifices in the second-mentioned member, and a pin disposed in orifices in the first and second-mentioned members.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES NYBERG.
