To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROBERT B. WALKER, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Strathcona, in the Province of Alberta, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cattle-Guards; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The invention to be hereinafter described relates to cattle guards.

This invention is an improvement on my prior Patent Number 980,033.

In order to more clearly disclose the construction, operation and use of the invention, reference should be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of the present application.

Throughout the several figures of the drawings like reference characters designate the same parts.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a top plan view of the invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation; Fig. 3 is an enlarged, fragmentary, plan view; Fig. 4 is a similar longitudinal sectional view; and Fig. 5 is an enlarged perspective view of the striking bar, detached.

Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 indicates a side member, of which there are a pair for each section of the guard. Between the side members of each pair are pivotally mounted a plurality of tread plates 2 each held normally elevated by means of a spring 3. To the free ends of the sides of each plate are pivotally connected arms 4 provided with perforated ears 5 and carrying a serrated striking bar 6. In the perforations of the ears 5 are secured pivot pins 7 which extend through arcuate guide slots 8 in the side members. This gives a sliding pivotal connection and support between the arms 4 and slde members 1. Thus, when an animal steps upon the tread plate 2 and forces it down, the arms 4 and bar 6 will be driven suddenly upward in an arc whose center is the pivotal connection between the arms 4 and members 1, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4. As the bar swings upwardly, it will strike and prick the animals shin, driving it from the track.

The combination of the pivotal connections between arms 4 and tread plates 2, with the sliding pivotal connections between the arms 4 and members 1, gives a greatly increased leverage power to the swing of the arms 4 and bar 6. Between the adjacent ends of the tread plates are arranged guide rollers 9 which are revolubly mounted in the side members 1. These guide rollers are so mounted in the spaces between the successive tread plates and are of such proportions as to substantially fill the spaces between these plates. As a result of this arrangement, it is impossible for an animal to place its foot between two of the plates.

It is thought that the operation and use of the invention will be clear from the preceding detailed description.

Ghanges may be made in the construction, arrangement, and disposition of the several parts of the invention without in any way departing from the field and scope of the same, and it is meant to include all such within this application wherein only a preferred form has been disclosed. V

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A cattle guard comprising, side members, tread plates pivotally mounted therein, and guard rollers mounted between said tread plates.

2. A cattle guard comprising, side members, tread plates pivot-ally mounted in said side members, arms pivotally connected to said plates, sliding pivotal connections between said arms and said side members, and a striking bar carried by said arms.
