Description

. etait-1I gime' @wat @mira 4ORISON C. WHITNEY, OF MEADVIIJLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 105,284, dated July 12, 1870.
'KNEE-LEVER FOR MELODEON OR ORGAN-SWELL.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
Knee-Lever for Knee-swells for Organs and Melodeons, which I verily believe has never before been vknown or used, and that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference y marked thereon.
The ordinary way of constructing a knee-lever is by attaching it by a hinge to the frame of the organ, and having it so adjusted that, when opened out, it rests against `the lever that operates vthe swell-valve, ]1, and, when turned back out of the way, it has no connection with the lever; By this arrangement it is evidentthatit can onlyope1ate the lever when in one position, but by my invention the knee-lever is hin ged to the lever that operates the swell-valve in such a way that it can vbe turned out or in, and 'yet be'v used at any time or position to operate the valve.
Figur'Z represents the front of the organ or melodeon, with the cover removed, to better show the po stion of the lever B, that works the swell-valve F, by' means of the connections D C, the L-shaped lever E.
To the lower end ofthe level' B the knee-lever H K is hung by a hinge, S, (see Figure 1,) in such a manner that, when notin use, it can be turned back under the action out of the way. 'Ihe position, when turned back, is shown at fig. 1, and dottedlines lig. 2.
Figure 3 represents a side view'ot my knee-lever `when the salue is turned out, showing the hinge at S,
the edge of the lever B, and the screw O, by which the lever B is attached to the action M.
It will be seen by g.1 that, although the knee lever H K is turned back under the action, that it is still attached to the lever B, so that a touch ot' the hand or knee at K will operate the lever B inthe same manner as if H K was turnedout, as shown at fig.2.
lhe dottedllines,lg. 2, `shows the knee-lever H K turned-back in the position of g. 1, and it will be seen that, in that position, the lever B can be equally well operated.
NVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows, to wit:
The construction of the knee-lever H K, attached to the leverB, by means of the hinge or joint S, when constructed as described, 'for the purposes set forth.
