To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ERNEST S. Janos, a

citizen of the United States, residing at C0- 'symbolicalindication of the wearing quality of a stocking, being particularly directed to those points or, parts of the stocking be subject to the greatest which are known to amount of wear, these parts being generally conceded tobe the heel and the toe of the stocking.

My invention, therefore, contemplates thepair of stockings upon artificial limbs and thesubjection of the heel of one stocking and the toe of the other to blows of a hammer or sledge element which may be alternate or not, as desired. This hammering action may operate with one orwith a pair-of stockings and maybe effected by various constructions of sledge ele. ments. In conjunction with this hammering action and to complete the symbolism, I desirably utilize a registeringdevice for the number of blows which any stocking or pair of stockings hasv been able to withstand. The artificial limbs 2 and 3' are given this capability of outward movement so that the blows received by their heel and toe are converted into a rubbing action somewhat similar in its nature to the rubbing action ordinarily received by a stocking when being actually worn, which rubbing action eventually wears a hole in the heel or toe of the stocking.

The shaft 10 carries a collar 11 which limits the inward movement of the handle'S of the sledge, such handle 8 being held against outward movement by the mounting on the extremity of the'shaft 'of an indicating arrow 12 secured at its forward end to the casing-1 by a bolt 13. The purpose of this arrow will be hereinafter described. Carried by the collar and desirably formed therewith is a boss 14 which in; sures oscillation of the handlev 8 with the shaft 10. The shaft 10 has a crankarm 15 secured thereto by a'set screw '16 and con-.

These artificial limbs of the s edge element. from its function of preventing outward movement of the sledge handle, serves to inmovement of-the shaft 10, which results inswinging the sledge element backward and forward. The relation of these parts is such that the movement of the sledge element'is comparatively slow while at either end of. its path of movement and comparatively accelerated in its proirimate' approach to a scribed.

Pivotally depending from the crank arm is a link 29 and connected to this link 29 is a lever arm 30 having a telescoping portion 31 which fits between cars 32 upon the body portion of the member30 and which has a slot and screw connection therewith as at 33. This telescoping portion 31 is rigidly connected to a collar 34; and this collar 34? is desirably secured to the. main shaft 35 of a register 36 of any preferred form. This I. register 36 is mounted preferabl upon the outer face of tliefcasing 1 and t e lever 30 with its telescoping portion 31 extends through a slot 37 in the face of the casing.
