To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY HERST'EIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain in construction and convenience, safety and efliciency in use.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my safety clothes line in use as applied to an upper story window and a pole. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of my window cross bar and part of window casing. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the same on the line 00 w of Fig. 2, with the central part of the bar in side elevation. Fig. at is an enlarged sectional view on the line g y of Fig. 3.

The clothes line is supported at the outer or pole end to the pole F by a pole pulley G in the ordinary way. At the house end I provide two supporting pulleys, both arranged in the same vertical plane and central with reference to the lateral dimensions of the window H, the upper house pulley I attached to the upper window casing 13 and the lower house pulley J attached to a cross bar K, the said line A being made endless in the usual way after being rove through the said pulleys, G, I and J. The said pole pulley G and upper house pulley I are of ordinary construction and supported in an ordinary way and the said lower house pulley J may be also of ordinary construction, but I prefer to have the same pro vided at the rear or supporting end with an eye 14 by which it may be removably hooked to a hook 15 secured to the said cross bar K, whereby the said lower'house pulley J may be unhooked when the line A is not in use. I prefer to make the said cross bar K removable in some ordinary manner, as by means of supporting holes 16 adapted toadmit supporting screw eyes L so that the eye 17 of the same may project sufficiently in front of the said bar Kto permit the insertion of supporting pins M for which a screw eye may be used as shown on the left side in Figs. 2 and 3, the said supporting screw eyes L being screwed into the wood work N of the side of the window casing. The said cross bar K I prefer to Specification of Letters Patent.

locate a little below the middle of the vertical height of the window H, so that for manipulating the line for sending the clothes D outwardly the line A may be grasped between the upper house pulley I and the lower house pulley J and operated with safety and relative ease by a downward vertical pull, as shown in Fig. 1. For the reverse motion the line may be operated in the reverse direction from the same point or by a horizontal pull fro-m a point just outside the lower house pulley J, the safety of the individual being assured by the said cross bar K. The fact that the safety of the individual is thus assured by the said cross bar K permits the individual in hanging out the clothes to operate with a feeling of confidence and security, and to lean out of the window to whatever extent may be necessary for proper and eflicient operation without any feeling of danger. The cross bar K being made removable avoids the objectionable feature of the obstruction of the window space when not in use. The removal of the said cross bar K as mentioned is facilitated by first removing the said lower house pulley J by unhooking the same from the said hook 15 after which has been done the said line A will be freely supported between the said outer pole pulley G and the upper house pulley I, and the said lower house pulley J may be allowed to swing freely and be supported by the said line A. In order however to have the said lower house pulley J readily available and under control for use when desired I prefer to provide a pulley hook 19 adapted to engage one of the said eyes 10 on the line A attached to the said pulley J by a cord 20.

The hook 22 attached to one end of a cord 23 the other end of which is attached to the screw eye 24 at the side of the window in the casing N, and adapted to hook into one of the eyes 10 on the said line A may be conveniently used to secure the line so as to be under control and ready for use and at the same time clear of the Window when not in use.

I claim as my invention A clothes line support including a pair of superposed pulleys arranged along the center of the Window casing, the upper pulley being located on the Window casing, and a cross bar extending across the Window casing and bearing the loWer pulley.
