2 SHEHTSSHEET nome c GHAELES HATZFIEl'l-FZ, MINERAL NELLS,
Application filed Apr Matters Zratent. P
131i. Serial lilo. 62 137.555).
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that, 1, CHARLES I-EATZFIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mineral Wells, in the county of Palo Pinto and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window Structures, of which the following e speei fication.
My invention relates to window structures and has-particular reference to su'ch devises including upper and lower sash frames which may be raised and lowered and swung or tilted An important object, of this invention is to provide a Window structure of the above character, which is simple in construction, easy to operate and cannot be opened from the exterior of the buildin A further object of my invention to provide novel means to lock the sash frames in their closed osition.
A further object of my invention is to provide novel means to hold one of the sh frames in adjustment at difi'erent angular positions.
Other-objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same, Figure 1 is an inner side View of my improved Window frame, Fig. 9 is a detail of device for holding the: upper sash frame in adjustment at different angular positions, 3 is a similar view of alatch to lock the adjacent, ends of the upper and lower sash :t'remos, taken on line of Fig. 1, Fig. l is a transverse vertical sectional View taken on line 4-4 of 1 and looking in the direct-ion of the arrow, the upper sash frame being swung inwardly, Fig. is similar view, showing the sash frames in different positions, Fig. 8 is a perspective View of one or the tracks for the upper sash frame, and, Fig. 7 is an enlarged sectional View taken substantially on the line 7---? of Fig. 1.
In the drawings WllOlBll]. is illustrated a preferred embodiment. of my invention, the numerals l and 2 designate vertical sides of the Window frame, which are connected at their lower ends with a sill 3, and an outer sill 4-, ha ing engagennnt with the inner sill, as shown.
The numeral 5 portion of the window I lliovsbly mounts-Cl V frame are upper ltl lo and 7, secszo 1.. i so like. oi the verti M side. and 53 I,
provided upon. the inner near its upper nd with s met ide, comprising has which is vertieallr disposed oatwarc ly extending herizo; at the lower end thereof 'll be secured to the ver' frame by of and such plate is said vertical side no he flush face thereof. The 9 .i 10 thereof are prorieel W in'sheped slot formed which is vertieall disposed for r portion of its length and at its lower end and a snhs zontal position. The or further comprises: a suhstentiall flange 13 carried by the plate 9 s t tion 10 and the may preferring formed integral therewith. The Within a suitable slot or spot in the vertical side of the 'WlDClGX-V 1 is to he understood that the two guide Ways secured sirh alike and are positioned in of the portions 10 o 4 ways is provided 'h an having an open ng formed th pivotally receiving pin 14%, on connected with the, lower end or me sash frame The lsi'ame i; pivotally supported and is mipahie o oscillated inwardly but is oscillating outwardly hy ing 15.
The lower sash frame 16 rigidly connected to of and. upon each of in bolt is disposed to oper: 12 of the track or guide Way. A eon is secured to the Cf-{Q loolt it; and one \vardly to be trained shout a pulley This cord. has commclion with a weight {not shown) as is Well l-iElOx When the upper end lower sash frames and 7 in their closed positions it are arranged one above the oinier, as she in i' v i t l 1g. Toe upper end or the sash twine is provided with an opening formed therein for receiving a stem 19, to the outer end of which is secured a knob 20. The sash frame 7 is further provided with an opening 21, within which is disposed to oscillate a plate 22, which is rigidly connected with the stem 19 and adapted to move into and out of an opening 23 formed in the lower end of the sash frame 6.
From the construction of the above re- ,ferred to parts, it is obvious that means are provided to lock and unlock the adjacent ends of the sash frames 6 and 7 The lower end of the sash frame 6 is provided upon its outer side with a strip 24:, which is rigidly secured thereto and positioned to overlap the line of engagement of the sash frames 6 and 7, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3. The ash frame 7 is provided upon its lower end and upon the inner side thereof with a lift member 25. Suitably secured to the upper end portion 5 of the window frame, is a stationary support 26, upon which is fulcrumed a lever 27, having connection at its outer end with a cord or other flexible member 28, which extends downwardly to engage a pulley 29, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 8. The cord 28 has its lower end attached to a reciprocatory stem 30, which is slidably mounted within an opening formed through the side 2. The stem 30 carries at its outer end a knob 31 and said stem also operates through an opening formed in a plate 32. The inner end of the pivoted lever 27 is apcrtured to receive a bolt 3-3, carrying a nut 3st upon its upper end and a head 35 upon the lower end thereof. This head operates through an opening formed in a plate 36 and is adapted for movement into and out of a socket 37, which is carried by the upper end of the sash frame 6, The bolt 33 is slidably mounted within an open ing formed through a stationary bracket 38, connected with the end piece 5. A compressible coil spring 39 serves to urge the head 35 downwardly into the socket 37. From the description of the above referred to parts, it is obvious that means are provided to lock the upper sash frame 6 in its closed position and adapted upon proper operation to release the sash frame to allow the same to oscillate inwardly.
The vertical side 1 is providedupon its inner wall with a plate 40 suitably secured thereto and arranged to be flush with the inner face of the wall. This plate is provided with upper and lower spaced openings for receiving reciprocatory pins 41 and 42, which are pivotally connected with a le ver 43, fulcrumed upon a stationary support- 4d. By pressing either of these reciprocatory pins inwardly until the same is flush with the plate d0, the other will be forced outwardly and disposed in the path of travel of the upper sash frame 6. From the construction of the above referred to parts, it is obvious that means are provided for holding the upper sash frame 6 in adjustment at different angular positions.
In Fig. 5 the plate 9 of the track or guide way is shown as being provided with plurality of cut-out portions or recesses d5, which are spaced from each other, as shown, and adapted for reception of the, eye bolt 16. "When. this structure is employed the sash frame 7 is not connected with a weight but is held in different vertical positions by the eye bolt fitting within a selected one of the openings hen the sash frames are in their closed positions they are arranged directly one above the other and are locked in such positions by the means hereinabove described. When it is desired to swing the upper sash frame 6 inwardly, the latch device, including the knob 20 is manipulated to unlock the lower sash frame from the upper one, subsequent to which the knob 31 is drawn outwardly whereby the head 35 is moved out of the socket 37. The sash frame 6 is then capable'pf being oscillated inwardly until such movement is limited by the engagement of thesash frame 6 with either of the pins 41 and 42. Assuming that the sash frames 6 and 7 are in their closed positions, the frame 7 having been freed from locked engagement with the frame 7, may have the upper end thereof moved inwardly and sub sequently upwardly. It will thus be seen that the sash frame 7 may be disposed in different vertical positions. The sash frame 7 may also be oscillated inwardly.
I wish it understood that the forms of my invention herewith shown and described are to be taken as preferred examples of the same, and that certain changes in the shapes, sizes, and arrangements of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus fully tion,.l claim The combination with a window frame, of an upper sash frame disposed therein, the window frame having its vertical side walls provided with L-shaped openings described my inven- 'which are disposed inwardly of the upper sash frame with their lower horizontal portions extending outwardly to be disposed below and suitably spaced from the lower end of the upper sash frame, i..-shaped metallic loop tracks adapted to fit snugly within the L-shapedopenings and be thus securely held in place, fiat plates formed upon the outer longitudinal edges of theloop L- shaped tracks. means for connecting the flat plates with the L-shaped tracks, a lower sash frame adapted to assume a position directly below and in alinement with the upper sash frame, projections upon op ice ' sash frame extending into posite edges of the upper end of the lower the L-shaped 100p tracks, whereby after the lower sash frame. has been moved horizentaliy inwardly the same may be elevated and swung in a vertical plane 'Wiih z elation t0 the upper sash frame, said plates being provided upon their outer portions with respect to the upper sash frame with spaced openingsv to receive the rods, frame may be supported 1n (hfierent Vert1 cal posltlons.
whereby the lower sash 10 In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
