Be it knewn that I, THEoDoRE a citizen if the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Beds, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in beds.

The objectof my invention is to provide a construction by which a vportion of a mattress of a bed may be vertically adjusted to different hei hts relative to the remaining portion. ery often an invalid, being the occupant of a bed, desires to have the middle portion of the mattress higher than the portions at the head and foot. Other occupants of the bed, at another time, may desire to have the'mattress level in all its arts.

With the use of my invention the mattress may be quickly and easily adjusted as to the height of its different parts for convenience in obstetrical operations.

The novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the preferred form of my invention, Figure 1 is a plan view of a d provided with my invention. 2 and 3 is a vertically adjustable bed bottom section comprising preferably a horizontal plate 5 on which are mounted vertical coil springs 6 which in turn support a horizontal plate 7. The bottom plate 5 has its ends disposed between vertical guides comprising vertical flanges 8 rovided at the opposite ends of two brac ets 9, which are secured respectively to the inner sides of the rails 1. spetively in the bracketsA 9 and hasisecured rigidly to it one or more cams comprising circular disks 11, which are preferably eccentrically mounted on the shaft 10. The bottom of the plate 5 is preferably provided with longitudinal ianges or projections 12 which are adapted to rest in peripheral notches 13, with which the disks 11 are. each rovided. I preferably secure to the rock s aft 10 adiacent its end two levers 14 by which the shaft may be rocked so as to elevate or lower the intermediate bed bottom section. Byhaving a lever at each side of the bed, a person at eitherside of the bed may readily rock the shaft l0. The plate 5 having the projections 12 engaging the notches 13 of the disks 11 serves to releasably hold the disks in the positions to which they may be adjusted.

The mattress may be of the usual type, or it may be, as shown in the drawings, composed of head and

15 and 16 which abut end to end and preferably overlap each other, the overlapping portions beingdisposed above and supported by the plate' 7 of the intermediate bed bottom section. The adjacent ends of the

15 and 16 `preferably are halved together, and the section 15 having its lower end fitted in a right angled recess 17 in the upper end and lower side of the section 16. The upper end of the section 16 is fitted in a siniilar recess 18 provided in the lower end and upper side of the section 15.

In operating my invention, it is but necessary to asp one of the levers 14 and with it swing or rock the shaft 10 in the proper direction for raising or lowering the vmiddle section of the bed bottom. When said bed bottom section is raised the overlapping ends of the

15 and 16, which is the middle portion of the mattress, will thus be raised. The projections 12 will enter the adjacent .notches 13, therebyv holding the disks 11 in the positions to which they are adjusted. The guides 8 serve to prevent lateral movement of the plate 5 when the disks 11 are rotated.

I do not limit my invention to the precise structure shown and described as many modifications may be made, within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit of my invention.
