Description
G. H. RAYMOND.
INK FOUNTAIN.
APPLICATION FILED AUG. 11, 1911.

nventor I I r Y a Attorneys CHARLES H. RAYMOND, or HAMLIN, TEXAS.
INK-FOUNTAIN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 11, 1911.
Patented Feb. 11,1913.
Serial No. 643,557.
To all whom, it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES H. RAYMOND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hamlin, in the county of Jones and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Ink-Fountain, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in ink fountains, and the primary object of the invention is the provision of an ink fountain and adjustable feeding means for feeding ink to platen presses, this particular construction being an improvement upon applicants Patent No. 981,110 granted January 10, 1911, and having in addition thereto a means for regulating the tension of the spring false bottom of the fountain to regulate the flow of ink therefrom and retain the same in the proper adjustment and rigid throughout its transverse length.
With the foregoing and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a printing press equipped with the improved ink fountain of the present invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section through one of the sections of the fountain. Fig. 8 is a similar section through the operating mechanism for the feed rolls of the two sections of the fountain, the pawl actuating yoke having its operating levers shown operably connected thereto.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the base board, on which is mounted a pair of ink fountains 2 and 3, the ink fountain 2 being relatively short and the ink fountain 3 being relatively long. Each of the fountains 2 and 3 is formed with a pair of end boards 1 and 5, and mounted in each of the ink fountains 2 and 3 is a feed roller 6, the ends of each of which rollers are provided with ratchet wheels or feed devices 7, the said wheels being located in the space 8 between the two fountains 2 and 3. These ratchet wheels are independently operable by means of a pair of pawls or levers 9 and 10, which are pivotally mounted upon an approximately U-shaped yoke 11, pivoted at 13 adjacent the shaft of the roller 6, andbeing operated in any suitable manner but preferably by means of the hooked rod 12, the said rod 12 having its lower end connected to the eyed portion 13 of the rod 14 which is connected by a clamp 15 to the transverse plate 15 of the roller carriage of the press. The draw rod 15 being connected to the arm 14, so that the said yoke 11 may be actuated to rotate the feed rolls 6.
For the purpose of regulating the amount of ink which is to be fed from the fountains 2 and 3 by the rollers 6 thereof, each of said fountains is provided in its bottom with a flexible member or partition 17 clearly shown in Fig. 2, and which is preferably in the nature of a false bottom and is con structed of sheet metal having at the rear end thereof a depending flange 18 which is bolted or otherwise suitably secured at 19 to the rear Wall 20 of the fountain. The forward free end of the false bottom 17 is located between the lower portion of the roller 6 and the base plate of the fountain and extends the full length of the fountain.
UISPOSQCl to slide upon the bottom 21 and thereby regulate the distance of the free end of the false bottom 17 from the roller 6 of the fountain, is a block or wedge 22 which is the full length of the fountain and is provided with the flat surface 23 resting upon the bottom of the fountain and the curved surface 2 1, said block being made in the form of a wedge and extending transversely the full length of either one of the fountains 2 and 3 and having connected thereto for movement in parallel, an adjusting screw 25, which is rotatably connected at 26 to the wedge and has a milled outer end 27 whereby the said screw may be rotated so that its threaded portion thereof meshes with the threaded portion of the wall 20 and thereby moves and retains the wedge 22 toward and away from the roller 6 to thereby regulate the distance between the free end of the false bottom 17 and the roller 6 of the fountain. By this means the amount of ink which is passed out between said roller 6 and the false bottom 17 may be regulated to a nicety, and by means of the adjustable wedges the false bottom is uniformly spaced from the bottom 21 and supported throughout its length.
The operation of this device is similar to the operation of the device as shown in the above mentioned patent, and by making the fountains in two separate compartments in either sectlon thereof may he used or not used for a single color or different colors of.v
ink, and while the sections are shown ;-as
of varying length it is to be understood that they may be made the'same length if desired.
What is claimed is:
An ink fountain having a compartment open at its "front edge, an inking roller 7 mounted in said open front edge and 'lo'nwedge shaped block resting upon the bottom'of the fountain below the false bottom -'the apex of the wedge being adjacent to the free edge of the false bottom, and a "single screw threaded in the rear wall of the fountain and operable exteriorly thereof for moving the wedge to and from the roller to regulate the position of the lower free edge of the false bottom relatively to the roller and throughout the length of the fountain. In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, -I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES H. RAYMOND.
