MOLD FOR CONCRETE BLOCKS.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 11, 1913.
Application filed February 12, 1912. Serial No. 677,216.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, WILLIAM COBB, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Jackson, in the county of Jackson and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Molds for Concrete Blocks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in molds for making concrete blocks and its object is to provide a device readily adjustable for different sizes of blocks and to provide the same with various new and useful features hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective of a device embodying my invention in closed position ready to receive the concrete; Fig. 2 a perspective of a concrete block made in the device; Fig. 3 an end elevation of the device; Fig. 4 the same with one end frame removed to show the construction; Fig. 5 the same with the adjacent 'support 4 also removed; Fig. 6 a detail in central vertical section; Fig. 7 shows the device opened out for removing the block, with one end frame removed; Fig. 8 a detail in front elevation of one end of the device; Fig. 9 a plan view with portions broken away and in open position; Fig. 10 an enlarged detail of one of the adjustable stops for holding the swinging ends in place when filling the mold and Fig. 11 a detail of the adjusting means for the main back plate of the frame.
Like numbers refer to like parts in all of the figures.
The fixed portions or frame-work of the device consists of end frames 1 of suitable shape connected near the front by a tie rod 2 and at the rear by a plate 3. rlhis plate is preferably adj ustably attached to the frames whereby it can be properly vmade to engage the rear edges of the ends of the mold. Cap screws 3a extend through this plate near the top and bottom thereof and into suitable screw threaded lugs on the frame and midway between these are located screws 3b in the plate which at the end pivotally engage the frames whereby the plate may be rocked on said screws and brought to proper adjustment by means of the cap screws 3a.
ywith a series of openings to detachably and adjustably engage and pivotally support this casting upon the rod 2. From the to of this notched member extends opposite y projecting arms 5 and 5a. Ony the arm 5 is hinged the ends 7 of the mold proper and on the arm 5a is adjustably mounted a bracket 8 provided with a cam 9. Between this bracket and the ends 7 of the mold is inserted a follower board 10 which forms one side of the mold and also serves to support and carry away the block after the same has been molded. To the under side of each arm 5 is bolted the respective ends of a plate 16 whereby these arms are coupled to each other and held parallel. Resting upon the upper sides of these arms is a plate 19 having any preferred design for the outer surface of the block and this plate is detachably secured by a hook bolt 20 engaging an eye on the said plate and extending through the plate 16.
On the outwardly projecting arm 5a is a lug which when the device is opened to remove the block engages the bar 4 and supports the device in open position. To hold the end plates of the molds from spreading apart at the side opposite the hinges adjustable stops 11 are provided on the back plate of the frame which are preferably adjustable step by step at regular intervals by means of holes in the stop spaced apart and a pin 23 in the plate 3 as shown in Fig. 10. These stops can thus be adjusted apart for certain different lengths of blocks and are held in place when so adjusted by cap screws 12 inserted through slots in the stops extending parallel with the rows of holes.
To properly guide the mold to plate between these stops a grooved segment 17 extends from the rear edge of the plate 1G and engages the pin 1S in the back plate 3 of the frame. This also serves to properly adjust the plates, the notched member 6, and the bar 4, when assembling the device for any specified length of block.
14 are projections which serve as handles to swing the mold from closed to open position and back again and also to swing the end plates about the hinges. To form concave recesses 25 in the ends of the blocks convex plates are attached to the inner sides of the ends 7 and to form hand holes 26 in t-hese recesses these convex plates are provided with lune shaped projections 22. These plates can be'detachable and changed as occasion may require by removing the bolts by which they are secured.
In operation the device is assembled for the preferred size of block by changing the various detachable parts comprising the plates 16, and 19 for length and changing the end plates 7 for width and the depth of the mold adjusted accordingly by engaging the proper recess 6 with the rod 2, and adjusting the parts properly on the connecting rod 2 and plate 3. lVhen closed the plate 19 forms the botto-m of the mold, the plate 7 the ends of the mold, the plate 3 the rear of the same, the follower board 10 the front of the same, and the top is open to receive the material. If hollow blocks are to be made any of the ordinary forms of cores can be used for the purpose and laid in the mold when the same is partially filled, being withdrawn when the same is opened for removal of the block. When the mold has been filled it is turned about the axis of the rod 2 to the position shown in Figs. 7 and 9, the end plate swung open and the platen removed with the block thereon.
