ALFRED RAYAND BENJAMIN FRANKLIN MONSON, 0E SHELBINA, MIS- SOURI.
Laim Patent No. 105,248, dated .my 12, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN' SCAFQLDING.
How-
The Schedule referredto in these Letters Patent and making part of the same,
To all (whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALFRED RAY and BENJA-l MIN FRANLIN Monson, both of Shelbina, in the county of Shelby and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Scaiblding; and wedo hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and` exact ldescription thereof.
The object of our invention is to produce for the use of builders, and others requiring it, an improved formv of scaffolding, and the manner 'of supporting the same.
The nature of our invention consisting in the use of a metallic support or clasp made of peculiar shape, so that it may fit over the horizontal arm used to uphold the plank or staging, and, at the same time, over the uprights or studding, the clasp being made open at one end, which open end has screw-holes at each side to admit a pin or screw used to make the clasp tight. The lower or solid end of the clasp is furnished with points or teeth, which take hold ou the studding and prevent the clasp from slipping down.
In the use of our invention the cumbrous poles, on which a scaold is usually builded, are dispensed with; the studding of the building itself` being made to answer that purpose.
The horizontal bar used to support the staging, we make in the following manner; that is, y
Take two boards of a suitable length, and fasten them together by means of a couple of blocks between them, one block at the extreme end and the other about one-fourth the length of the plank from the other end, leaving a'space' between the boards a little wider than the studding, so that the studding may belet in the ope'n end up to the block.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will proceed to describe its construction, reference being-had to the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon, the same being made a part of this specification, in which'- Figure 1 is an upright section.
Figure 2 is front view.
A represents the upright post o r studding, on which the scaffold is supported.
B is the horizontal arm or staging-support, consisting of two pieces of timber fastened together byV means of the blocks E E, in the manner shown.
C is the metallic hand or clasp, furnished with points D is a screw, passing through the-open or upper end of the clasp, and secures the saine.
a is a wooden key, used to adjust the clasp to any width of studding.
l In operating our invention, the arm B vis -placed upon the studding A, which islet in the longitudinal space in the arm as faras the block l', after which the clasp G is put in place diagonally across the studding, with its solid and pointed part below the arm B, and the screw D adjusted; then,'if any space is left betweenthe screw and the studding, we use the key a to ll up the space and tighten the clasp, after which the staging is laid on the arm B, and the scaffold is complete.
The invention, as above described, has reference more particularly to its use in 'ame buildings; but it may be equally well adapted to brick, 'and is best erected as follows:
Instead of the studding, use an upright planted at a suitable distance from Vthe building, and reverse the position of the ami B', that is, have the point of the arm toward the building and resting against the same.
Having thus -fully described our invention,
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patentof the United States, is
A scalold-support, consisting of the arm B, the clasp C, with points c c, .in connection with the upright A, constructed and operated substantially as shown and described.
The above specification of our improvement in scaffolding, signed this 30th day of April, A. D. 1870. ALFRED RAY.
BENJAMIN FRANKLIN MON SON.
