Specification of Letters ratcntl Patten [139d Feb. 11,1913.
Application filed December 21, 1910. Serial No. 588,621.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Harman J. Dix Assn,
a citizen of the 'United States, and a resident of Orlando, in the county of Logan and 'State of Oklahoma, have invented a new and Improved Draft Attachment for Binders, of which the following-is a full, clear,'
and exact descriptionl I The object of the present invention isto provide a draft attachment for a binder sup ported on carrying wheels and provided with means for attachment to the body of the binder inthe cutting position of the same andwith means for securing the platform of the binder upon the attachment when transporting-the binder from place to v springs 11) are secured to the under side of the platform 9 of the binder, and said springs are provided with journal boxes, in which is mounted the axle 12 of the wheels place.
One embodiment of the present invention is disclosed by the. structure illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which: Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a binder having attached thereto a. draft truck constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention, the attachment and binder being shown in the position in which the binder is removed from the field; Fig. 2 is aplan view of the same with the reel of the binder omitted; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view in plan, showing the draft attachment connected'w'ith the binder in the cutting position of the latter, the binder being broken away and parts omitted, and
Fight is a sectional view, the section being taken in rear of the axle of the truck and showing the tongue thereof and one of the the side bars 14 and 15 are bifurcated and,
the bifurcations are aperturedto receive the bolts 30." Q I The side car 15, which is the longer, is pivoted by the king bolt 18 to the axle 19 npon which are mounted wheels 22, and to which the tongue 20 is secured, said tongue being also connected to the axle 19 by hounds 21=To the tongue 20, the evener 17 @is pivoted, and to the evner-the doubletrees carrying the swingletrecs 24, are pivoted.
A diagonal brace 25 is secured to the side bar 15 and to the forward end of the side har ld, so as to strengthen the connection between. the'frame and the truck, and a tie rod 26 having one end pivoted at.27 to the forward end of the side bar 14 of the frame,
ispmvided with a hook at its other end for a purpose hereinafter described. Secured to the forward end of the side bar 14 ofthe frame and to the projecting end of the front reins.
In Figs, 1 and 2 of the drawings elliptical 11. The springs 10 are scented to the platform by bolts (1 so that they with their wheels can be readily attached or detached from the binder. The sprin 10 and wheels 11 are so disposed on the platform of thebinder with respect to the portion of the platform on the side of the axle 12 removed from the traction wheel 13, that the weight of said portion of the platform counterbalances the weight of the traction wheel 13 and1 the driving mechanism connected therewit 1.
The platform 9 is provided on its front portion with the eye 28 and the apertured ears or lugs 29. The latform is also pro vided on its under si e, between the axle 12 of the wheels 11 and the outer end thereof,wit-h a cross bar 34: having a loop'or eye 33, and the divider 36 of the plat-form is provided with a slot 37. The binder except as hereinbefore described is of the usual and well known-construction.
To transport the binder from place to place, the springsilfi with their-wheels 11 having beenatt'ai'zhed' to the under side of the platform as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and the ordinary carrying wheel at the outer end- 16*? of the frame is engaged with the slot is prevented from tilting laterally by rea-v 37 of the divider as. The binder 1515m son of the wheels 11 and the divider getting firmly on. the side bars 14: and .15thetruck frame. v
By securing the binder platform 01x the frame of the truck as described, thetruck frame is permitted to Swinalaterally to" orm mountedon the frame of the truck;
in Figs. 1 and 2, they-binder can be easil liand readily moved to 'andfrom a field-or overan ordinaryroad." Having arriwed'at the field of operation, the springs 10 with their. wheels 11 are'removed from the platform 9 and the hook-bolt 35- disengaged m the slot of .the' divid'e'r36, when by movin the draft-truck backward 'thehook 32 w'1 l be". disengaged from the loop or eye- 33. The frame of the truck" is then drawn from under'the platform and the carrying wheel, which supports the endof the platform, isv replaced. The truck frame is then "connected to the binder, as shown in Fig. 3 by engaging the bifurcated ends 31"of the truckrameswith' the ears 29 of the binder and passing the bolts 30 through the bifurcated ends and ears, and
engaging the'tie rod 26 of the truckframe' with the eye' 28'of the binder. When draft attachment is thus attached to the" binder, the binderis in cutting position and can be'readily drawn over thefield.
Havin thus described my invention what I c aim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
'The combination with a binder having a of the traction wheel ,ofthe "binder, of a one side bar projecting beyond-the front cross bar and pivotally connected with the truck, a brace extending from the forward end of the projectin portion of the side bar to' the. forward. en of the other side bar,'a hook on-the-rear cross bar of the frame and engaging the loop of the. binder platform,
and a bolt carried by a cross bar of. the
frame and extending h ghthe slot of the binder platform.
- In testimony whereof I have signed my -loop on the under side of its platform and a slot atothe outer GIId'Of said platform, and. removable wheels mounted on the platform with their axle at right angles .to the axle fwheeledtruckyb. frameformedofapair of side bars of unequal length and cross bars,
