Specification of Letters gatent.
Application filed March 30. 1912. Serial No. 687,405.
To all onto/n it may OOHCGML Be it known that. 1:, CHARLES C. HARIYT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State'of and useful Improvements in Expansion- Bolts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to expansion bolts, the object in view being to provide a bolt of the character specified which is capable of a large amount of expansion, so as to adapt it to fit tightly Within holes of Widely varying diameter. 7
A further object of the invention is to provide in connection With an outer shell and abolt cooperating, therewith, means whereby the bolt is securely held and prevented from escaping; after the shell has been anded by means of the bolt.
ll itn the above and other objects in View, the invention consists of the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated 'n the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
in the drawings: Figure 1 is a of the bolt and casing complete. Fig. 2 is plan view of the bolt removed from the casing. 3 is a longitudinal section through the bolt. Fig. 4 is a cross section through the same.
The expansion bolt of this invention embodies .nliaily an outer casing or shell 1, which is divided diametrically and longh tudinally into two equal sections.
While the casing, as a whole, is cylindrical in its outer contour, it will be observed that the casing is interiorly tapered from end to end, the larger end portion of the plan View I ceive the head of the bolt 2.
Virginia, have invented new casing being adapted to primarily re \i In carrying out the present invention, the opposing sections of the shell or casing are internally formed with annular grooves and shoulders, forniing steps 3 of progressively decreasing, diameter from the larger toward the smaller end of the casinm,
The head 4- of the bolt is made tapering on the inner side thereof. as shown at 5, so that as the bolt proper is drawn through the sectional casing or shell by incans of the usual nut G. the inclined face of the head of the bolt will ride over and past the steps upon the interior oi": the shell, permitting the angular margin 7 of the bolt head to snap into the grooves upon the interior of the shell. This avoids any possibility of the bolt slipping backward and escaping from the expansion shell of the device, in the event of the nut Working loose on the bolt. Furthermore, by reason of the arrangement illustrated and described, the shell may be considerably expanded in size,
thereby adapting the expansion bolt, as a whole, to be firmly engaged with holes'of greatly varying sizes.
What is clairned is:
An expansion bolt, comprising a cylindrical shell of uniform outside diameter having a longitudinal bore which tapers uniformly from end to end and also having annular grooves formed in the tapering Wall of said bore, said shell being diametrically divided into separable sections, and a bolt extending lengthv'vise of said bore and having a beveled head adapted to seat itself in said grooves as it is drawn through the shell. In testimony whereof I allix my signatiire in presence of two Witnesses.
