Be it known that I, JAMES'R. DENIsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and State of Vashington, have invented a new and useful Extra Deck, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to extra decks for ferry-boats, and the like, where it is necessary to have a supplemental deck, which may be adjusted to Vdifferent elevations, to accommodate wharves of varying heights; to meet the changes of water-level due to movements of the tide; and also, where it is 'desired to transfer a cargo from one boat to another, the decks of the two boats having to be adjusted to the same level.

One of the objects of my improvement is to provide a boat with adeck of the character mentioned, provided with a novel form of superstructure, to withstand, efficiently, the strains incident to its operation.

A further object is the provision of new and improved operating means for raising and lowering the deck, so as to maintain, readily, a. quick but full control over its movement.

Still another object which I accomplish by this invention, is an easy up and down movement of the adjustable deck, and this I attain by the peculiar form of supportinguides, hereinafter described.

An additional object is the provision of a novel arrangement of connecting gears for operating the extra deck, so that the same engine which is used to propel the boat, may be employed for moving the deck, and in a ready and expeditious manner.

Further objects and advantages will appear from the following detailed description, and the appended claim wherein the invention is pointed out more precisely.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and which are to be read in conjunction therewith, Figure I is a top plan view, with parts broken away, of a boat equipped with my improvements, and Fig. II is a vertical, sectional view of the same, also showing cars positioned on the adjustable deck.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different views, A designates the deck of the boat, and A2 the extra deck, adjustable up and down, to accommodate wharves of different Specification of Letters Patent.

heights, when the boat may be higher or lower, .owing'to tidal changes; or loading from one boat to another, and other similar purposes, where vertical relative adjustment between the delivering and receiving platforms is required.

Fixedly secured to the deck A2 are the threaded boxes b, which may be of any suitable number, according to the size of the boat, and the deck to be adjusted. At the outer ends of the boxes Z9 are T-shaped openings, arranged to engage the vertical T- shaped guide-posts b2, which are secured to the deck A in any convenient manner.

Positioned in the bottom of the boat are the pedest-als b3, in which are rotatably mounted the threaded posts b4, the same being arranged to engage and move through the boxes b.

b5 are gears keyed to the posts Z2* at their lower ends. Positioned to engage the gears b5 are worm-wheels 226, which are mounted rigidly on the shafts bl, running longitudinally of the boat. There are four such shaftsr 227, each carrying a miter-pinion bs at its inner end.

Arranged transversely of the boat is the main power shaft b9, carrying the mitergears Z210, adapted to mesh with the aforementioned miter-pinions 298.

311 is a clutch for controlling the movement of the shafts 227 from the power shaft 22;, and Z212 is a lever for operating the clutch The guide-posts b2 are braced by the longitudinal beams Z913. 614 are cross-braces, serving, additionally, to strengthen the guide-posts 62, and maintain the entire structure rigid. Z215 are side-braces, secured vto the deck A, and ext-ending to the guide-posts b2. Arranged at the top of the guide-posts b2, are the transverse beams bla. In this manner, I provide a completely rigid framework, or superstructure, properly braced at every point, and which serves, effectually, to support the extra deck, at any elevation, and with any weight.

The extra deck, I have shown, here, as provided with tracks 61S, C, indicating cars positioned thereon, but it is to be understood that the tracks may be omitted, and the deck made perfectly plain, or in any other form desired, to suit the particular purposes.

l/Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is Y 'In combination With the body-portion of a boat, of a movable deck, of threaded posts rotatably mounted on said body-portion7 T- shaped guide-posts also mounted on the body-portion7 longitudinal and lateral braces for holding said guide-posts against either longitudinal or lateral movement, relative to the body-portion of the boat, boxes carried by the movable deck, and provided With T-shaped openings by Which they are adapted to fit closely and move vertically on the A afore-mentioned guide-posts, said boxes being further provided With threaded openings engaging the aforementioned threaded posts, pinions mounted on the said threaded posts, shafts arranged longitudinally of the boat, Worms on said shafts and in engagement with the pinions, a power shaft arranged transversely and centrally Vof the boat and in engagement With the longitudinal shafts beforementioned, and a clutch-mechanism controlling said trans- Verse shaft.
